Fact Type: adding a second place

Post by Glenn Webby » 06 Jan 2023 14:33

Happy New Year folks!

Quick query. I want to create a fact type which adds a second Place to the Property Box Fact panel. In other words an equivalent of Emigration (which has Place: and To: ) or Immigration (which has Place: and From:), both have two places in the Fact panel. (I'm adding Travelled as a Fact, for my own purposes, so I know the difference between travelling abroad and Emigration.)

Essentially I've created a Fact Type in the Fact Type Window and copied the sentence template from Fact Type Emigration. I've also copied the witness roles, just supplementing them both with my own narrative. The important point is that having read the Help for this, the key part of my Sentence Template reads:

" {individual} travelled <from {_place}> <to {_place2}>"

From the Help documentation I thought the addition of _place2 would add that field to the Fact panel ui but it doesn't.

I've modified/added Fact Types before and all have been very straightforward, so I'm clearly doing something wrong.

Any help much appreciated as always.

This was discussed in detail quite recently, in this thread: Emigration Fact - Copying and Using Both Copies (21346)

It goes off topic a bit, but the answer you probably want is in the second post: "You can't create a Custom Fact with both From and To boxes, unfortunately".

Also, there is a draft Knowledge Base article currently under discussion in Custom Fact Fields (21400) that says:
The Emigration and Immigration events have additional To and From (_PLAC) fields and users often wonder if those fields can be used in other facts. They cannot, but labelled Note meta-fields can be used instead.
The section Show Fact Fields in the Property Box illustrates a Flew from custom fact with a labelled Note meta-field for the To: destination. The article also makes other suggestions to use an Attribute instead of an Event or one of the All tab 'hidden' standard fields.
