New / Revised Census Templates delivered with new release

Post by jbtapscott » 11 Dec 2022 20:07

When a new release of AS is installed, I will often get a message to the effect that the release includes new or updated Census templates and asking if I want to overwrite my existing ones. I have made changes to a number of the baseline templates so I always select "No".

A couple of questions really:
  • If there is a completely new template (viz. one that did not exist in previous versions), how would I get hold of it if I replied "No" as described above?;
  • If an existing template has been changed by me, is there any mechanism I can use to compare the "old" and "new" templates?. (By way of information - I use the Census Template "Export" function once a month so have plenty of backups, and am quite okay with going in to an XML file or similar files to review data).
Just to explain - I have modified all the English and Welsh, plus a number of Canadian & US templates such that, for example, Relationship to Head of Family, Marital Status and Occupation all have a Column Type of Generic and that the data added to these columns is added to the fact Local Note,

The message you get says:

As the message says, clicking 'No' preserves any you've modified. If you've not modified them they will always be updated and new census templates that don't exist in your installation will always be imported. As the message also says, if you click No you can always load the updated templates in future using the reset option on the Census Template screen. One thing you could do is to export your customised templates then reset any templates you are interested in and then re-import any of your customised templates again. I am aware that this could be improved, but I've had higher priority things to work on so far. I did make improvements to the way auto-text templates are dealt with in an earlier update which means there is never any concern when new auto-text templates appear.

The only changes in this version as explained in the 'What's New' list are the new 1921 Scotland census template and a change to the 1950 US census to change the name order to Surname, FirstName. So you can always take a look at the description of the changes and make decisions based on that.

Also just to add that there is no need to make the Head of Family and Marital Status into Generic types - you can just select the option to add them to the fact local note. You also have the option to do that with the Occupation type too, but that will also generate an Occupation fact which I assume you don't want.

Thanks Nick - just wanted to make sure I wasn't missing any settings / "tricks" on the templates front.

Hadn't realised I didn't need to change columns to "Generic" but all done now so will try to remember that for the future!.
