1921 England Census Military template
I came across a census page for one of my relatives in the military in 1921. The military census pages are different to the usual Englan census pages so I modified the template to suit.
Attached here in case anyone else needs it.
(Note: this is the latest version of the template as at 10 December 2022)

This is for AS you need to import it into the census templates.

Re: 1921 England Census Military template
I was going to reply with
AS>Tools>Census >Census Templates....
Import... button, find the download to import then click OK
Which I have done, but can't for the life of me find where it is, to use it.
Then if I open the 1921 English Census in the editor, it appears the military one has overwritten the standard.
How do I reverse this!?
[Edit] I reset them and all is good, so follow-up question, how do we import the military one so it doesn't overwrite the original?

Re: 1921 England Census Military template
Ideally, Valkrider who posted it should explain.
The problem is that line 3 of that XML file is <Entry RecordType="Census" Country="England" Year="1921">
So it overwrites the Census for England in 1921.
Presumably, the item Country="England" should be Country="England Military"

Re: 1921 England Census Military template
Yes Mike, I've edited as you've suggested and now have an extra Template under 'Region' in AStatewise wrote: ↑07 Dec 2022 14:51Ideally, Valkrider who posted it should explain.

So
Valkrider - perhaps you should remove the template as posted above to prevent others overwriting the default 1921 template, make the edit and re-load it?
Nick - Should there be a warning if we are apparently going to overwrite the default template?

Re: 1921 England Census Military template
Sorry I should have mentioned that It overwrote the original template that can then easily be restored once you have entered the military census.
I had looked at the XML file and didn't find an obvious way to differentiate this to the standard England 1921 Census. Thanks @Mike for suggesting changing the Country (that doesn't seem logical but it works). So attached is an updated XML template.
Can one of the mods please replace the template in the first post as I can't.

I don't think it's a particularly major issue as it is so easy to reset it again.

Re: 1921 England Census Military template
Ancestral Sources describes this as a Region not a Country and it is often used for different states in America, etc. so I think it is slightly more logical if you think of England Military as a region.
Re: 1921 England Census Military template
I created a 1921 Military Census template along with the normal 1921 England template shortly after the census was released on FMP. I thought that I had posted the military template in the forum along with the normal version which I believe was the basis of the template used by Nick.
Rather than changing the country for the military template, I altered the "Entry RecordType=" line in the template XML file as follows.
<Entry RecordType="Census" Country="England" Year="1921 Military">
When selecting a census template in AS, with Census and England selected in the drop down menus, the Year drop down then shows the available census years from 1841 through to 1921 and also "1921 Military" as two separate available templates.
Possibly a slightly better solution

Re: 1921 England Census Military template
Yes and no, as the OP hadn't warned about it overwriting in his post, I certainly didn't realise until I went to try and find the template, and realised it had overwritten and took me some time to realise I could reset the template(s)NickWalker wrote: ↑08 Dec 2022 08:30I don't think it's a particularly major issue as it is so easy to reset it again.
Most programs nowadays throw up a warning if you are overwriting something.
How many others might do the same without realising they've no longer got the default template?

Re: 1921 England Census Military template
I'd like to think that no one would create a template that overwrites an existing one without warning. I don't particularly want to spend hours of my own personal time implementing changes that are very obscure and haven't come up before in the last 13 years and are easily resolved.

Colin, even mods cannot replace attachment files, but you should be able to delete the attachment.
Click your username Valkrider at the top right of the window and choose User Control Panel.
In the OVERVIEW tab, the Manage Attachments option lets you MARK and DELETE any of your Attachments.
BTW: I've deleted your first post Attachment.

That's fair enough Nick regarding your time and effort on this brilliant tool.NickWalker wrote: ↑08 Dec 2022 09:49I'd like to think that no one would create a template that overwrites an existing one without warning. Seems someone did just what you'd hoped wouldn't happen, but it's all corrected now.
