Effective/Efficient use of Icons in Charts

Post by gsward » 07 Dec 2022 21:10

I have previously only used customised icons in charts on an ad hoc basis to identify ancestors with specific Occupations or having Wills for example.

I am thinking I should maybe use them in a more structured way. Can someone advise on two things:
  1. If I want to track the country of birth and death, and whether they appear in specific censuses there are quite a number of expressions I am going to need to add. Are there any shortcuts to this process?
  2. I have noticed that some charts share their settings, like the Ancestors, Descendants, Ancestors & Descendants, and All Relatives - is the only way to avoid this is to create a custom diagram?
Thanks.

  1. Since you have clearly created Condition Expressions before, what sort of shortcuts were you hoping for?
The short answer is there are no shortcuts, except to copy & paste Census Condition Expressions and change the year.
If you are expecting Census events in the same year for different countries such as UK and Canada then the Expressions get quite complex and hinge on how you differentiate such countries in the Census events/Citations.
  2. Yes.

One thing I do find annoying regards icons, is their placement.

With a top-down or bottom-up orientation, the icons are placed tidily below the long side of the box, however, with a left-right or right-left orientation, the icons are placed alongside the short side of the box, which makes for a very untidy looking diagram.

It would be nice if one could specify where the icons were placed in relation to the box (or have I missed something?). My personal preference would always place them below the box, which is currently not possible in the left-right or right-left orientation.
