Save & backup

Post by David Hawkins » 08 Nov 2022 17:10

A few weeks ago, the option to backup stopped appearing when closing down - not a major problem, I could always manually do it. Now, the save option has also disappeared, so changes made in the last few minutes can be lost unless I remember to save manually.

Is there any reason for this? I'm running Windows 10 and I haven't changed any settings. I guess here is a very simple answer.

What changed (if anything) on your PC a few weeks ago? Was a Windows update installed, for example?

David, please be more specific about what is missing.
Do you mean the top left Save button with an icon that looks like a blue floppy disk?
Do you mean the top left File > Save (Ctrl+S) command?

What does your File > Project Window... show?
Does it list your Project?
What is the Autosave: setting?

Please post a screenshot illustrating the problem. See FHUG KB Forum Usage Tips for Attachments and Taking Screenshots.

There have been a few Windows upgrades recently, but I can't be certain about a direct link between them and the changes to FH as I don't use FH every day. Windows upgrades nearly always change my search-engine preferences and sometimes disable my sound system, but I usually see that immediately.

When I close FH using the button in the top right corner of the screen, it used to come up with pop-up options for saving or backing up. I still have a version of FH on my old computer, so I attach screen shots of both of these . Now it just shuts straight down, even if there are unsaved changes. My autosave is set to 5 minutes. Note that the "Always Prompt for Backup on Exit" button is also ticked, and has never been changed.

The File > Project Window does show the project, copy attached.

If I understand correctly, on your old PC the FH closure prompts to Save and Backup work OK and gave the screenshots.
But on another PC when FH is closed there are never any prompts.
I assume both those FH installations are Version 6.2.7.

The relevant settings that govern those closure prompts are:
Tools > Preferences... > File Load/Save > File Saving Options for Enable Autosave and Autosave on close
Tools > Preferences... > Backup > Backup on Exit

However, even with Autosave on close ticked, my FH V6.2.7 and FH V7.0.17.1 both always prompt to Save, which should not happen. So the Autosave on close feature appears to be broken. But you have the opposite effect of never prompting to Save.

Assuming your FH settings are the same on both PC then the recommended solution is to first Restart your PC.
That rebuilds your Windows Profile by avoiding Quick Start associated with Shut down and reboot.
If that does not cure the problem then try re-installing FH using the latest free update from CP.

For me with that option checked it doesn't autosave on exit (File > Exit) but it does autosave on close (File > Close). With it not checked it does prompt to save when I close (File > Close).

So the option Autosave on close seems to apply to File > Close not File > Exit.

Well spotted Bill. But File > Close Project only closes the Project and not FH itself. So another click is needed anyway.

However, David has the opposite effect of no prompt to Save whatever command he uses.

Yes, I was just pointing out what happens when you close the project. I agree that it should also save on exit as well as save on close. This should be reported to CP.

Edit: I corrected a mistake in my wording.

Many thanks for the help. Having ticked the boxes, everything is now OK. My concern is how did these preferences get changed - I was not even aware of where to find them! Is this problem unique to me, or have other people noted it. I note that "Autosave on Close" was not an option on Vn 6.0.

Keeping my master on a laptop not linked to the internet seems to have been a good choice.

David, I question why you are still using FH V6.0 when should have updated to V6.2.7 for free long ago.

I cannot explain how those settings got changed, except to say that strange things sometimes happen to Windows Registry data entries without an obvious cause.

According to David's profile he is using V6.2. (He didn't say he was using V6.0, just that Autosave on Close "was not an option on Vn 6.0.")

OK, that crossed my mind, but can you remember what options existed on early versions of FH?
I just did not imagine David could remember how FH behaved 7 years ago.
If he has different versions of FH on different PC then his Profile cannot say that.
For test purposes, I have FH V6.2.7 on one PC and FH V7.0 on another but my Profile cannot explain that.

Hi Mike, sorry for the confusion. You are quite right about my memory!

I have FH V6.2.7 on my desktop, connected to the internet. This is the version I have just corrected with your help.

I have my master on a new stand-alone laptop running V6.0 (from disk). I considered a "temporary" link to the internet to do the upgrade, but by then FH V7 was available and the only available upgrade seemed to be to V7.

Is V6.2.7 still available as a free upgrade? How?

Many thanks

David

Yes, V6.2.7 is available from CP at https://www.family-historian.co.uk/down ... ad-archive in the Download Archive tab for Version 6.

BTW: You cannot upgrade to FH V7 without connecting to the Internet. It has been discussed before and it is simply just not possible. Sorry!
