'Envelope' is Set as the Default Paper Size

Post by APerson » 30 Aug 2022 21:12

Hi All,

I'm having a very strange problem that I can't resolve. Specifically, I'm trying to create a few reports and I can't get them to print properly.

The first problem occurs when I try to print reports - the paper size is absolutely incorrect and, upon further exploration, I have found that the default paper size is set to "Envelope #10." By selecting another printer, rather than the default, the paper size setting will change to "letter." At that point, the report will then display the correct paper size, the content is resized and I'm able to print. Interestingly, when I return to the default printer, the paper size will now display "letter" and not "Envelope #10."

The second problem is very similar but involves printing charts. For example, when I try to print a pedigree chart, the display and default paper size will display "Envelope #10." Changing printers will change the page size, but it's still not the correct one. More importantly, the content is not resized.

I've tried everything I can think of - all the print settings I can locate in FH7, examining print setups on Windows, etc.

Any ideas?

Thanks.
Jeff La Marca

Jeff

Have you checked what your printer(s) are actually set to.
If you open a Word/Excel or similar document and do a print preview, are you seeing the same problem?
For example, my default printer is set to Letter as below. So is your default printer showing Envelope as the paper available?
I've just changed mine from Letter to A4 and noticed 'Envelope #10' is roughly midway between the Letter and A4 on the selection list.

Yes, that is a bit strange, but what are the default page size settings for your actual printers?
If you simply try to print any document from Windows, using say Microsoft Word, what is the default paper size?

To adjust those defaults in Windows 10, use Start > Settings > Devices > Printers & scanners
Select a printer and click Manage then Printing preferences where you should be able to specify paper size.
OK out and restart FH. Does that use the desired paper size?

Much like what I said. As an IT engineer I dislike the Win10 > Start > Settings introduction and still open Control Panel > Devices and Printers as I find this far more flexible, but it's personal preference. Some may find the new Win10 Settings easier to use.
Interestingly, in Win11, using Settings > Bluetooth & Devices > Printers & scanners now opens olde style Control Panel!!

Check you are using correct printer driver for your particular model of printer, and not a Microsoft supplied one.
Go to your peinter makers website and download and install the latest driver for your model.

I recently had some weird effects when printing after updating to Windows 11. All was sorted when I replaced the Microsoft supplied generic printer driver with the correct Brother printer driver, specifically designed for my model.

Thanks everyone for your help and suggestions. I spent a lot of time battling with this issue yesterday and today. As I was walking through your suggestions, I continued to get strange things happening when trying to print from other applications (and each one behaved differently). In fact, I was trying to obtain screen captures to demonstrate the problem so I could post them here and yet couldn't even obtain those as the various setup windows stopped displaying. The behaviors were very inconsistent and rather random.

At that point, I suspected, but wasn't sure, that it had something to do with my HP Printer (although I was also having problems when trying to "print" to pdf). Given the many, many problems I've had with the HP for the past year and then the fact that I couldn't print anything at all (although I did many to "print" several pdfs but they were the wrong size), I called HP support again only to find that the printer was not connecting properly to my network - even though my system kept reporting that the printer was connected. As a result, it was messing everything up - including other "printers" on my system. What that had to do with FH trying to "print" only as an "envelope" is beyond me.

Anyway, things appear to be working properly now and I'm keeping my fingers crossed that I don't have any more problems.

Thanks again everyone for your help and suggestions. Much appreciated!
