Restricting photos in the 'individual multimedia report'
Hi, is there a way of choosing photos to include in the 'individual multimedia report'?
Apart from my parents and my siblings we have no family photos, so to break up my book, I've been adding snips of the BMD certificates (like you'd get from the GRO as a pdf) to my family group sheet reports in the book, but no other photos. But I'd like to add a separate page of photos of my mum and dad as in the individual multimedia report which I've downloaded. But that includes the birth and marriage images too, which I don't want repeated (they are full width in the family group sheet section, but tiny when shown as 3 across in the multimedia report).
I've added an unrelated individual to my project, called it Photos / Mum&Dad, and added some photos to that, which works in the individual multimedia report, but I just wondered if there is another solution, or if that workaround isn't recommended. I'm also tempted to create a 2nd unrelated individual so that I can split the photos into medium or large as necessary. And a third for other photos such as churches.
Thanks,
Deirdre

Re: Restricting photos in the 'individual multimedia report'
Have you considered the standard Media Report and selecting just the Media photos you want to be shown?
Investigate its Report >Options that offer a great deal of control over what is displayed and the size of the images.
e.g.
Main tab: Untick anything you don't want.
Data Items tab: Select all items not wanted by using the usual Shft and Ctrl key method and click Delete.
Pictures tab: Adjust the Location and Size of images, and their Caption.
Sources tab: Inhibit source citations.
review the other tabs...
The only thing that is not possible is to remove the list of people who are linked to the image.
You could have a different Media Report for different categories of photos.
Save each customised Media Report as a separate Report Type so they can be easily used again.
e.g.
Media Report Mum & Dad Medium
Media Report Mum & Dad Large
Media Report Churches

Re: Restricting photos in the 'individual multimedia report'
Thanks Mike, I started off with the media report but despite having gone through all the options, I couldn't see how to get several photos (depending on size set) across the page, they all end up in separate rows and as separate 'sections' even when small size. I'm clearly missing something here (though your hint about deleting the unwanted data items is great thanks - I'd been selecting each item and choosing 'hide').
I've added a 'snip' of the current report (choosing right or centre simply moves them across). I can't see how to hide the names either, though there is no name on the middle one

Re: Restricting photos in the 'individual multimedia report'
Deirdre, When you refer to the 'Individual Multimedia Report' in your question, do you mean the Individual Scrapbook Report? (Found under Publish>Miscellaneous reports).
Unfortunately there are some bugs in those report options at the moment (which have been reported to Calico Pie) but it might meet your needs.
In the Report Options>Pictures tab there are tick boxes to include/exclude pictures linked to Facts and Places. These tick boxes don't work because they cannot be made to exclude those pictures. However you can change the number of pictures for these catergories (as well as Sources and Family pictures) to 0. This has the desired effect.
Of course this approach will only work if you have NOT linked images of certificates etc to the Individual record as a whole but only linked them to Sources or Facts. If the unwanted images are linked directly to the Individual they will still be included in the report. (The only way round it would be to temporarily mark the unwanted images 'Exclude from Reports' while you generate this particular report.)

Ah, OK. In that case you could experiment with the Individual Scrapbook report. As I said, some of the options don't work properly at the moment but you might be able to tailor it to suit you. It all depends on whether you have linked images of certificates, places, etc to sources or facts and NOT to the Individual record.

Re: Restricting photos in the 'individual multimedia report'
Thanks Lorna, will have a look at the scrapbook option, though unfortunately i have all my BMD images attached to the relevant individual (or couple).
However, by playing with the sizes I have discovered a layout I'm happy with, using my 'unrelated individual' workaround .... I've had to make it smaller to attach but this is a full width A4

Re: Restricting photos in the 'individual multimedia report'
Another technique is explained in FHOG KB Creating a Book under Book Free Page Content and uses a Blank Diagram to create pages of photos and text in any arrangement you like just like in a word-processor.
It is a little fiddly but lets you choose exactly what layout you want with any sizes of photos arranged on the same page with any titles or captions, etc. It avoids the unrelated individual workaround.
I was going to mention it earlier but decided the various standard Report possibilities needed exploring first.

Re: Restricting photos in the 'individual multimedia report'
Thanks Mike, given the variety of shapes and sizes I'll have a look at that, but at least I now know that I can use my workaround if needed. Thanks all.
Edited to say that i can't find 'standard diagram types > blank diagram'. Would it be called something different in v7?

Yes, it is Charts > Blank Diagram because Charts is the replacement for View > Standard Diagram Types.
Also, it is View > Charts > Blank Diagram.
Also, it is View > Charts > Blank Diagram.

Re: Restricting photos in the 'individual multimedia report'
Thanks again Mike, certainly more fiddly than my workaround, but clearly gives more control over layout and size etc. Maybe if I had photos of lots of generations I'd go with the workaround for ease, but I'll have a proper 'go' at this tomorrow - getting too hot to concentrate fully now. Thanks again.

Re: Restricting photos in the 'individual multimedia report'
I'm clearly missing some vital clues here because sadly I can't get this to work, though it is useful and what I would ideally like to use. I added a variety of size photos to a test blank diagram, set the page to portrait, and adjusted the margins, sized them to what looked a good fit on one page, and saved. Added to my book, but they took up 4 pages and I can't get rid of the dark grey background. Went back to my saved chart, removed the photos which were on 'extra' pages, and re-saved the chart. Have now tried several options, but cannot create a decent looking page, so will give up I'm afraid, and use my workaround. Thanks for your help though Mike, really appreciated.

Re: Restricting photos in the 'individual multimedia report'
Could you please explain in more detail what the problems are?
However, it sounds like you may not have followed the Book Free Page Content instructions very closely.
e.g.
The very first step says: "Use Diagram > Options > Background: One colour and in Options select white, OK."
That converts the grey background to white as you prefer (and as most would prefer).

Re: Restricting photos in the 'individual multimedia report'
Thanks Mike, I have gone through the help pages several times, briefly last night and a number of times today, convinced it was me, but I couldn't see anything. My diagram options box comes up as this, and I can't see 'Background: one colour' to select
But apologies, I've just realised how stupid I've been
(I'm blaming the heat!). I was looking for 'background: one colour' and assumed the 'generation stripes' default - and the options around it - related to a family tree diagram so ignored it. I tried the 'sundry colours' option but that didn't work either.
I'm still having trouble with design though as I fit a page of photos, but when brought into the book they spill over 4 pages. Reducing the scale works, so I'll work on the design some more (now I know that I can get a white background). I'm writing up my own 'how to' notes too.
Apologies once again

Re: Restricting photos in the 'individual multimedia report'
Did you click the Show Page Boundaries button in the diagram toolbar? Make sure the printer settings are set to A4, then adjust the page sizes relative to the photos as explained in the Help files (see below). This has the same effect as scaling but when the page boundaries are showing it's easier to see exactly what will fit.I'm still having trouble with design though as I fit a page of photos, but when brought into the book they spill over 4 pages.

Re: Restricting photos in the 'individual multimedia report'
Thanks Lorna, with everyone's help I'm getting there now! I had checked the page setup, but not the printer setup (the book was printing ok), and the diagram page was defaulting to letter. Have just changed that; I had 'show page boundaries' selected and thought the photos fitted sensibly inside, but the photos are still a little too big, so need a bit more adjustment. I will read through the help pages thanks; and will draw a rectangle around the photos and save as a template.

Re: Restricting photos in the 'individual multimedia report'
Yes, you need to leave plenty of margin around the Page in the Diagram Chart design.
Remember that normally in a Diagram printed on several pages there is next to no margin to allow the pages to be taped together without much overlap.
The page margin in the Book is quite large (as is normal in a book) so cannot accommodate the whole A4 page of the saved Diagram Chart without reducing its Scale somewhat.
When inserted into the Book, Diagram Charts often seem to be allocated 4 pages. Perhaps because the content is larger than can fit on one page within the margins. That is why the Book Free Page Content instructions say: "In Select Chart Pages click Position on Page, then use cursor to drag to middle of one page."
Perhaps it needs to add advice about reducing Scale to get the content to fit one page.

Re: Restricting photos in the 'individual multimedia report'
Thanks Mike, I think I'm just about there with my book and photo design now, though plenty of chapters to fill yet. So hopefully the last of the questions
.
Not really scratched the surface of FH I'm sure, but having inserted my gedcom file from ancestry the data was 95% there for me to tweak (and I've just added the 1921 census entries).
