Project window

Post by Johnr65 » 15 Jul 2022 09:04

I recently started a small tree and even though I didn't set it as the default tree, it came up instantly when I opened FH7 today. I browsed for my actual project and found it but it doesn't show in the Project window?

John
Have you created a project, or are you just opening a GEDCOM?
At the top of FH which of these does it state?

John, what is the full path to your Rosser 100422 project folder?
I suspect it is New Volume (E:)\Documents\Family Historian Projects\Rosser 100422 as it was in 2017.

If so, then here are step by step instructions for that project - please follow them to the letter :-
  1. Use File > Project Window
  2. Left click to the right of Location: and select Choose Location...
  3. In the Browse For Folder dialogue select your New Volume (E:) drive
  4. Then select the Documents folder
  5. Then select the Family Historian Projects folder
  6. Click OK
Then the Rosser 100422 project should appear and probably the new small tree too.

Since I bought a new pc, Mike I don't have an E Drive but C which is 500GB SSD and D which is a 2TB portable drive.
So following your instructions, I went to Documents found FH Projects, clicked on next one called FH Projects and it now shows my Rosser project but no others?

Your earlier screenshot shows the Family Historian Sample Project correctly located in the Family Historian projects folder. But you say you "clicked on next one called FH Projects" and found your Rosser file there. It sounds as if you may have two folders called Family Historian Projects, one nested inside the other. If so, you need to move the Rosser project into the higher level Family Historian Projects folder, beside the Sample Project. It will then show in the Project window, as that is where FH is currently looking.

However, a couple of month ago (on 15 May) you said "I've redownloaded GD (Google Drive) and am now uploading my project to it -taking about an hour but there are nearly 32k people on it. The project window on FH7 shows no projects within it but it loads the correct project and the blue location shows the correct root." Did you abandon the idea of using Google Drive as the location of your projects?

How many projects do you have? Are they scattered in different places? You can't get them all to show in the Project window unless they are all in the same location.

Hi Lorna,
The sample sems to have disappeared. I've given up on Google Drive as my tree is no longer as large as it was.
When I go to C Drive and Documents it shows initially 3 items including the sample project, and, when I click on the 1st item FH projects it shows FH and my project, see the following:

OK, so it’s the Family Historian Sample Project which is now in the ‘wrong’ (unconventional) place. Move it inside the Family Historian Projects folder, beside the Rosser project. Now open FH and in the Project window make sure the Location is set to Documents\Family Historian Projects. You should now see both the Sample Project and the Rosser project in the Project window.

You also have a folder called Family Historian inside the Family Historian Projects folder. What is that? Is it another project? If not, it probably shouldn’t be there. What is in it?

Sorry, but I think you have got that back to front Lorna and may confuse John.
Family Historian Sample Project is in the correct conventional place and the other two are not.

These are the full paths according to his screenshots:

This PC\Documents\Family Historian Projects contains Family Historian Sample Project
This PC\Documents\Family Historian Projects\Family Historian Projects contains Family Historian
This PC\Documents\Family Historian Projects\Family Historian Projects contains Rosser 100422

If FH File > Project Window > Location is reset to the Installation Default of Documents\Family Historian Projects then the Family Historian Sample Project is OK.

If FH File > Project Window > Location is This PC\Documents\Family Historian Projects\Family Historian Projects then the Rosser 100422 project and probably a Family Historian project will be OK.

I suggest you move the Rosser 100422 and Family Historian folders up to the This PC\Documents\Family Historian Projects folder alongside the Family Historian Sample Project folder.
Then all three projects should be OK if FH File > Project Window > Location is reset to the Installation Default of Documents\Family Historian Projects.

Yes, sorry I got the 2 screenshots the wrong way round in my head! (I had it the right way round in yesterday's post. I blame the heat... )

I would just add that after moving the Rosser 100422 and Family Historian folders up to This PC\Documents\Family Historian Projects it would be a good idea to delete the empty lower level Family Historian Projects folder to avoid future confusion.

If the Family Historian folder is indeed an FH project it would be a good idea to rename that project (using More Tasks > Rename Project in the Project window) to indicate what it contains.

Yes Mike that worked, now I've the sample and my project in the project window and made mine the default.
If I remember correctly, Mike, did you tell me once that all the media is within my project? If that is so I shouldn't need to keep a separate folder on my pc for media?

Whether all Media are kept within the Project folder is a personal choice. I cannot recall what you chose.
In FH, use the Tools > External File Links... command and review the File Links.
If the list starts with Project Data Folder then all Media are within the Project folder.
If any C: or D: or E: drive letter is listed then those Media are outside the Project.

While there, tick the Show Broken Links Only option and tell me if any Media are listed.

Did you also move the Family Historian folder in the same way you moved your Rosser 100422 folder?
That may have included a Family Historian project in the File > Project Window.

If the This PC\Documents\Family Historian Projects\Family Historian Projects\ folder is now empty, then as advised by Lorna, that empty folder should be deleted to avoid any future confusion.

It says Google Drive because that is what the FH Rosser 100422 Project has recorded in a couple of its Media records.
That D: drive Google Drive path is where your Project is telling FH to look for the Media files
They are broken links because FH cannot find the Google Drive folder on the D: drive of your PC as it no longer exists.

Yes, try the Auto Repair Links button and let me know if all the links get repaired or not.

BTW:
You still seem to have the double nested Family Historian Projects folders that we advised you to mend.
When the Media have been sorted out we must try to fix that.

Re: Project window

Post by tatewise » 21 Jul 2022 12:57

Sorry John, but that is far from OK.

Your Current Project Folder: shown at the top of your screenshot is:
C:\Users\johnw\Documents\Family Historian Projects\Family Historian Projects\Rosser 100422

So your Media files should be inside that Project folder at:
C:\Users\johnw\Documents\Family Historian Projects\Family Historian Projects\Rosser 100422\Rosser 100422.fh_data\Media
Then they would appear in File Links as Project Data Folder\Media\...

Whereas, the File Links list shows them as located in:
D:\Documents\Google Drive\Family Historian Projects\Rosser 010821\Rosser 010821.fh_data\Media
That is where they were located when you had your Rosser 010821 project on Google Drive.

Notice that you still have the duplicate \Family Historian Projects\Family Historian Projects\ folders.
Earlier we tried to advise you to eliminate that duplication but you have not followed the instructions correctly.
I think the easiest method for you is as follows:
  1. In FH, open the File > Project Window, select the Rosser 100422 project and then More Tasks... > Copy Project...
  2. Set Location for Copy to C:\Users\johnw\Documents\Family Historian Projects and click Copy
  3. Now select the Family Historian Sample Project and repeat the above Copy Project... process.
  4. Now select the Family Historian project if it exists and repeat the above Copy Project... process.
  5. Finally, use More Tasks... > Project List > Reset Location to Installation Default
After all that the Project Window Location: should say Documents\Family Historian Projects and all your Projects should be listed and be able to be opened.

If that was successful, then let's try and fix the Media files problem. Otherwise don't do anything and tell me.
Use Windows File Explorer to very carefully Move (not Copy) all the Media files from
D:\Documents\Google Drive\Family Historian Projects\Rosser 010821\Rosser 010821.fh_data\Media
to
C:\Users\johnw\Documents\Family Historian Projects\Rosser 100422\Rosser 100422.fh_data\Media

In FH, in the Rosser 100422 project use Tools > External File Links... and Auto Repair Links.
The File Links should start Project Data Folder\Media\... and not list any C: or D: drive folders.

If everything is working correctly, use Windows File Explorer and delete the duplicate nested folder:
C:\Users\johnw\Documents\Family Historian Projects\Family Historian Projects

Mike I think I've successfully copied my project and the sample project as instructed, however the Family Historian project doesn't exist in the project window. I've reset them to the default location, see above:
As to the file explorer I don't appear to have a 'move' function, see following:

BTW: In the Project Window please right-click your Rosser 100422 project and Set as Default Project.

Cut & Paste to C:\Users\johnw\Documents\Family Historian Projects\Rosser 100422\Rosser 100422.fh_data\Media?
I can't 'paste it there as it's already got my media in it?

Ok. Looking back at your Wed 20th Jul 2022 16:06 screenshots, many of your Media files are where they should be in the Project Data Folder - Media.

So only the repaired Media files in the File Links list under D:\Documents\Google Drive\... need be Cut & Pasted.
Use the Tools > External File Links... command and note the Media files listed under D:\Documents\Google Drive\...

Then use File Explorer and Cut & Paste just those Media files to your Project Media folder.
Preferably, keep the Media files in the same folder.
i.e.
Cut files from the census folder:
D:\Documents\Google Drive\Family Historian Projects\Rosser 010821\Rosser 010821.fh_data\Media\census
and Paste to the census folder:
C:\Users\johnw\Documents\Family Historian Projects\Rosser 100422\Rosser 100422.fh_data\Media\census

Finally, use Auto Repair Links and hopefully they should all move to Project Data Folder - Media.

The above method removes the files from the D: drive where FH is looking for them and puts them inside your Project folder so that FH find them there.

That screenshot lists all your Media files.
e.g.
Census 1971 St George the Martyr Southwark, Surrey, England RG10 Piece_603; Folio_77; Page_3; GSU roll_818908. (Rosser, William).jpg is a .jpg image file.

It looks like all those Census ... entries are .jpg files.

So in File Explorer, you should find all those .jpg files in the folder:
D:\Documents\Google Drive\Family Historian Projects\Rosser 010821\Rosser 010821.fh_data\Media\census
