Using 5.0.0.

Currently my tree has about 1800 records. I have discovered that there was an error in part of y linked persons - and therefore deleted some links.
I am now left with a number of entries which are NOT linked to my main tree - either as individua entries or as very small sub-trees but trees that are not part of my core tree.
How do I identify these surplus entries and delete them please??

You can find all your unlinked people/groups from the Query menu under 'Relatives & Relationships' right at the bottom of the list is 'Search for Orphans', click on that.

Under the Query Tab I have a "Search for Orphans" - identical to what Rusty suggests but not via a Query Menu or under 'Relatives & Relationships'.

If this query is available in V5 it will identify people by "pool":

This query is designed to make it easy to locate individuals who have no relatives. However, it also makes it easy to locate small groups of individuals who are all related to one another, but not to anyone else.

It works by introducing the idea of a 'pool'. A pool is a group of individuals who are directly or indirectly related to one another (you are "indirectly related" to X, if you are directly related to someone who is directly related to X - or if you are directly related to someone who is indirectly related to X, for that matter).

Family Historian works out how many pools there are, and arbitrarily assigns numbers to them. By sorting on pool number, it is easy to see both how many pools there are, and how many people belong to each of them.

If you have a small tree file in which everyone is directly or indirectly related to everyone else, there will be only one pool, numbered 1.

Your "main tree" is probably those people in pool 1 - but check! (We had a discussion a while ago on this forum how pool number would have been assigned - we did not cover V5)

If you only want your main tree, the easiest thing to do (V6 onwards) is to split off the main tree with all its sources and media etc to a new project leaving all the "unwanted stuff" behind (but keep the files - just in case!).

If V5 has the "split tree helper" on the File Menu have a careful look at that and work on a copy of your file/project

Others may come forward with more specific V5 advice.

I personally live with "fragments" as I never know when they may either genuinely link into my main tree or prove useful to someone who sends me an "are we related" type email (they may not be related to me, but may link into a fragment).

As David has explained, the standard Query Search for Orphans identifies unrelated trees by Relationship Pool number.

Assuming your database is in a Project, use the File > Project Window > More Tasks > Copy Project option to create a temporary backup copy of the Project.
Alternatively, use File > Backup/Restore > Full Backup to create an external backup file.

Use the Search for Orphans Query results to create a Named List of Individual records to be retained, i.e. those in Pool number 1, by using the Query Menu option Add Selected Cell Records to Named List.
Then you can use File > Split Tree Helper to Delete all Individual records NOT found by the Individual query below Individual Query: Named List Members.
Under Other Records choose to delete those left with no links to them.

BTW: It is going to become increasingly difficult for us to give reliable advice for FH V5 which is 8 years old and two major versions behind, because very few of us use it now.
