Basics of citations and sources

Post by mooregpmoore » 26 Mar 2022 16:15

I've been an FH user since 2017; using V7 currently. I have added hundreds of family members and their general information. I also have a lot of details and photos on my laptop, with hand written notes regarding where I have retrieved the information.
However, I have never used the FH citation or source screens and I'm now trying to play catch up.
What is the difference between citations and sources and how do I begin using the FH screens?
As an example, I have my birth and baptism records and photos of each. I have similar records for other family members.
I am guessing that the citation is "Birth" and "Baptism" and the source is the document.
I apologize for this seeming so basic and I need try to do a search of previous general usage posts, but I want to be sure I'm getting things noted and media posted correctly the first time.

Have you found your way to the KnowledgeBase, specifically Sources and Citations in Version 7 (for New Users)?

I'm suggesting the version for New Users because you say you've never used the Sources and Citations Feature. Have a look there (and at the linked material) and then come back with more questions (there are always more questions :D )

I don't know how I missed this, but this is exactly what I was looking for. As I make my way through this, I may have additional questions. This will keep me busy for a while. Thank you so much.

I have used Family Historian since V4, but since using V7 I have not found out how to add a source from my prepared list from other versions.

If I click on source+ near the top left of the project window and click on ‘Prepare Citation to existing Source’, my window of sources comes up. I then click on, for example, Parish Records, but as nothing happened, I double clicked and a ‘Prepared Citation’ box popped up. I then added PE24/2 in the ‘where within’, but then I’m LOST!

I have read ‘Customising V7 to use V6 (simple) style sources’, ‘Source Property Box & Citation Window’ and followed it ok to <Custom Item> in the left hand pane, but there isn’t one! I have also tried to find an answer on the forum, but failed.

Please could someone offer advice on where I am going wrong? Many thanks.

It should be at the top of the list on the left. You might need to enlarge the Customize Property Box window or scroll up to see it.

Thank you Lorna. Now I cannot find ‘Item Name’. I’m not doing very well here!

After you have selected <Custom Item> in the left hand list you need to click > in the middle to add it to the right hand side. You will be asked whether it is to be added to the Main Area (if it is a field in the Source record itself, such as the main Source Note) or the Citation Area (for example if it's the citation note). You will then see a window like this:

It’s too complicated for me, but my husband has sorted it out for me.
Thank you for your help. I could do with someone in East Yorkshire to give me lessons!

Have you checked out https://depellejg.wixsite.com/mysite/teaching, I think her courses are all online at the moment, but she is really good and from Yorkshire.
