Diagram marriage duplicated of all persons

Post by Genie15 » 02 Apr 2022 15:07

Hello everyone,
I am using version 7.0.11.
I have generated a diagram of all persons but there is at least one marriage duplicated.
One has four children and the other has no children.
On checking the parents in focus Window they both have the same ID number and no duplicated marriage or other facts have been found.
I have attached a partial copy of the diagram.

BTW: You don't need to put the screenshot in a wordprocessor document. Just save the screenshot image file and attach that directly as below. It saves us having to open the .odt file to see the image. See Forum Usage Tips Attachments.

Although the Individual records are not duplicated, I suspect there is a duplicate Family record for the couple.
In the Focus Window do the couple appear twice? Once with children and once without?

Hello Tatewise,
Thank for the tip about attachments.
No there is only the one set of parents that I can see.
My theory is that it has something to do with the diagram options that I have/have not selected.
On creating a diagram for Frank of just ancestors and decedents I just get the one family.

It is nothing to do with the Diagram Options (except that you can enable/disable the coloured ribbons).

Open the Families tab of the Records Window, and click the Family Records column header to sort alphabetically.
Enter KAIN in the Last Name Filter top left.
Is there only one record for ...of Frank George KAIN and Annie Aliza ADAMS?

If so, then the only other explanation I can think of is that in their ancestral past some cousins have married such that some ancestors of the husband are also ancestors of the wife.

Hello Tatewise,
There is only one family.
Would the cousin theory not show on the diagram that I created yesterday?

There must be some duplication somewhere?
IE Frank on the left has no marriage fact but does on the right, and conversely, Annie on the left has the marriage fact, but on the right does not.
Frank on the left also has a line to the top of the box (suggesting parents) but on the right does not.

Neil, the Marriage event is displayed in the standard default manner.
i.e. Descendant (straw box) does NOT show any Marriage, Spouse (brown box) does show the Marriage.
See the Text Scheme definition for the Marriage events that defaults that way to prevent multiple marriages in one box.

However, I agree that there is some odd relationship involved because both Frank George KAIN (straw box on the left) and Annie Eliza ADAMS (straw box on the right) are Descendants (directly or indirectly) of the Diagram tree root person.

Genie15, I assume your screenshot is from an All Relatives diagram?

Maybe the Tools > How Related... command will reveal the relationships.

Enter the Diagram tree root person as the First Person.
Enter Frank George KAIN as the Second Person, and Display Graphically...

Repeat that but with Annie Eliza ADAMS as the Second Person.
Do those two relationship diagrams explain the dual descendant dilemma?

Genie 15: In your first post you said "I have generated a diagram of all persons ...". Do you mean an All Relatives diagram or All Relatives + Indirect Relatives diagram or an Everyone Diagram? Either of the latter two types will often involve having small extra trees inserted, to include people who would not otherwise be included. Annie doesn't happen to have any parents recorded, but if she did the only way to show them in the diagram (because they would be 'indirect relatives' of the diagram root) would be to have an extra tree like the one shown in your diagram, in which Annie is not the spouse but the 'principal' person in the marriage so that her parents and other ancestors could be included.

If you create a standard All Relatives diagram the extra tree won't be there.

Lorna, you may be correct, but I've just simulated that scenario, where the wife has no parents, and her 'mini-tree' does not appear in either the Everyone or All Relatives - Indirect Relatives Diagram, unless it is inserted as a separate tree Diagram.

It would help us visualise the problem better if the Expansion Buttons were enabled via Diagram > Expand/Close Branches > Expansion Buttons or the Buttons icon in the toolbar.

Yes, I noticed the expansion buttons were hidden so it is possible that the wife does have parents recorded but their branch has been closed off in the diagram. (And of course in that case if they are revealed it might become clear that there is a common ancestor, meaning that the husband and wife are indeed distant cousins.) Otherwise I agree that the extra tree must have been inserted manually into the diagram.

Hello Neil, I agree but, I cannot find it.
If it is as Tatewise said a cousin or some other relative then that could be almost anywhere!

Hello Tatewise, The diagram is a Everyone Diagram.
How Related shows no relationship in both options.

Hello Lorna,
I mean an Everyone Diagram.
I created the All Relatives and you are right there is no extra tree with Frank and Annie, but, there is an extra tree with the Mother of Frank.
Frank's mother Ellen Osbourne married again after her first husband died.
Would this cause the problem with Frank and Annie?

In an All Relatives diagram, there can only be one tree, so how can Ellen Osbourne be in a separate tree?
Or do you mean All Relatives + Indirect Relatives?
Another screenshot would help with Expansion Buttons enabled please.

Would multiple marriages or a duplicate person affect it?
(Still learning, but it maybe something else you check)
For example:
A: I have multiple possible marriage dates for some couples and they were input as separate facts some of which have tentative, rejected or preferred flags. (Opposed individuals that divorced then remarried) Would that show as multiple lines between them? Or would the diagram show someone with two spouses that happen to have the same name, birth etc . . .
B: An individual has been entered twice and needs to be merged or some error from the merger? A set of sisters married a set of brothers. When inputting the data they were first entered as a sibling and then rather then linking an existing person a new husband was created.
(When I view a chart by clicking the icon for all relatives I don't get to see this? A chart with Indirect relatives was mentioned , how do I do that? So that both of the couples parents are show when I don't have children currently recorded for either couple? Is that possible?)
Anyways in this scenario the names would be the same, but if you compare their id number they are actually different people.
C. I have also noticed the chart adding in extra people when they have been married more than one time. Instead of showing my relative having one box and two boxes attached to him for his first and second wife. (This may be because there were actually three.) There is his box, double lines, wife 1's box, then a jagged squiggle line, a smaller pink box (which if I click on it, it is him), double lines, wife 2's box, another jagged squiggle line, and another small pink box for him, and finally wife 3's box
