Image sequencing

Post by mezentia » 02 Mar 2022 17:48

I have noticed on several occasions that when I drag several images (more than 4) onto the media tab of a source that I am creating, FH sequences (preferences) them in a different order to that in which I (a) have numbered the images, and (b) that I have selected them. For example, images labelled Page 1, Page 2, etc., up to page 10 end up with images 6 to 10 sequenced as 1 to 5, and 1 to 5 as sequence 7 to 10. The timestamp on the images seems to be ignored, too. However, if I add the images 3 or 4 at a time, then the sequencing remains is correct. WW1 military records can be up to 25 or 30 pages so doing them all at once would be useful if it worked, rather than small blocks. Has this behaviour been noticed by anyone else? It is consistent over all updates to V7, although I have yet to try it with V7.0.11

Yes, I've noticed that behaviour in earlier versions of FH as well as the latest version. I use the up/down arrows in the Property box to change the order if necessary. It's mildly irritating but I don't often need to add more than 3 or 4 images at a time so it's manageable. The exception is military records, as you have mentioned, but I usually find it's only a few images which need moving.

I have noticed this behaviour in other programs, for example Adobe Photoshop - where dragging multiple files into the workspace does not mean they will open in the order they are arranged in the source program (usually File Explorer). I've seen this happen elsewhere, too, but I can't remember where. So I suspect this might be something to do with the way the operating system drag/drop is handling the files rather than the destination application. I may be wrong :?

Hmm. I'm inclined to agree. In fact, as I read what you'd written, a little routine running in the back of my mind asked why the order of objects in the visible window File Explorer, should necessarily match the order of the objects in the collection (or whatever I should be calling it). After all, the visible File Explorer list can change. Would that mean that the selected file objects (or whatever they are) are presented to the recipient in the same order? I've absolutely no idea either but it's something that would concern me until I understood what happens in real life. (Or at least in Windows...)
