Can you create templated generic sources?

Post by Calline » 25 Feb 2022 15:41

I would really like to be able to create generic sources in respect of baptism and burial registers rather than create individual sources for each entry but really want a template as I have been looking at a lot of parish registers and often have about a dozen entries to document for each register. These are usually pre 1813 so the citation would be free text

Is this feasible in FHv7?

Thank you for any advice or guidance

I suspect you have slightly misunderstood the source terminologies.

Generic Sources are the ones without Templates.
Templated Sources use the new Source Templates.
See FHUG KB Sources and Citations in Version 7 (for New Users).

Method 1 'splitter' Sources have a distinct Source record for each document.
Method 2 'lumper' Sources share the same Source record among a class of documents.
See FHUG KB Citing Sources: Method 1 and Method 2.

So I think you are proposing Templated Method 2 Sources for Baptism and Burial Parish Registers
However, that is not generally recommended as it is likely to lead to duplicate Citations for the multiple Facts derived from one Parish Register entry.
It is exactly the same argument as recommending Method 1 Sources for Birth and Death Certificates.
The quantity of data entry is almost the same whichever you choose, but Method 1 avoids duplicate Citations, so if any retrospective changes are needed the text is all in one place in the Source record.

BTW: Have you looked at Ancestral Sources for capturing Birth, Baptism, Death & Burial source documents?

Calline, it might not appeal to everyone, but as a Lumper, I use the KISS principle, (Keep it Simple Stupid) so for ALL my Christenings, Marriages and Burials, for which I have downloaded a Parish Register Image.

I simply use the same generic source i.e Christening Image, Marriage Image or Burial Image, as appropriate, without further citation.

I save the image to my PC with names such as J01234 Christening for John Smith (where J01234 is my custome id)
All details of the event are stored in the fact for the individual.

As Miketate has explained difference between Template and Generic sources, I won’t add more, but I think my method meets your criteria for the type of source you are after.

Thank you all for your comments and advice.

I was just trying to see if it was possible to speed up the creation of generic sources when I was creating a lot of very similar generic sources but it looks as though that is not possible.

I'm actually a splitter for most sources :)

I'm also a splitter, and although I use Ancestral Sources a lot, when entering several generic sources of the same type, particularly relatively simple sources from the same register (by that I mean with fairly concise and similar information in each record, that is easy to transcribe and alter by editing a previous transcript from the same source, such as a parish register entry for a baptism or burial) I use the Automatic Source Citation bar to clone a copy of the previous entry. That effectively leaves you with a pre-completed template for the next entry which needs minimal editing to create the new source - usually a slight edit to the source title, publication information and citation details, the text from source if you are recording it, and unlinking any image file attached to the entry from the record that you have cloned, before attaching the new one.

Even when creating a new source for a record that I haven't used for some time, but where I know that I have a previous source to an entry in the same register, I find it quicker and easier to search for and clone the original record, then alter it to suit the new source, than creating it anew from scratch.

The Clone Any Record plugin can also create a new source by copying an old one.
