Favourites in FH Help

Post by AdrianBruce » 05 Feb 2022 20:52

I presume this isn't actually an FH issue but a Windows one.

Many, many times, I've marked certain topics in FH's Help as Favourites. And equally often, eventually they disappear. It's happened again today - and I'm convinced that I'd spent some time marking up my favourite favourites... I don't think I've ever thought the issue through, until today when I stared at my PC and hazarded a guess that my favourites were created on the previous machine, not this one.

Is there any way that favourites can be transferred? From one PC to another? Indeed, from one user to another on the same PC?

Yes, I understand that my v6 favourites won't be much good for v7 - but what if the help file is reissued within v7? Are the favourites lost? Or just those looking at the reissued bit?

Sorry - this feels like I should be aware of the issues - but I'm not...

That is a good question. I've spent a while trying to discover where those Favourites tab topics are saved, and failed.
They don't appear to be saved with any FH settings in the C:\ProgramData\Calico Pie\ folder or in the Windows Registry.
I've looked in C:\Program Files\, C:\Program Files (x86)\, C:\Users\<username>\AppData\, and C:\Windows\
I've tried a Google search for advice on where they are saved ~ nothing!
Does anybody know where they are saved?

The above is about a different software package's help files, but would appear to be generally applicable. I can't check it out as I'm on my phone at the moment.

Yes, I found various references to such as C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\HTML Help\hh.dat
However, I could not find any files like that anywhere in C:\Users\<username>\AppData\ Local, Roaming, etc...

C:\Users\,username>\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\HTML Help\hh.dat and looked at the hex, it has my fh stuff in there.

Ah! Found it now. Not sure how I missed that yesterday.
It seems to be a composite of certain details for all the MS Help pages on the PC for the current user, and not just FH Help.

https://www.help-info.de/kb/en/HTMLHelp ... serve.html

This is the best page I can find which explains about hh.dat.

Oh .... golly gosh. Thanks guys.

So short of some magic freeware, it really looks like the only way to bookmark pages in a help file is potentially temporary (if HH.DAT gets rebuilt) and certainly unique to that Windows user.

I've not spent long looking for the magic freeware - words like Windows and Help file tend to get a lot of irrelevant hits! :(

Ah - I like the alternative approach Helen. I'd bookmarked the online version of the Help but it was so far down that I'd forgotten that I had done so. I've pulled it further up so (hopefully) I can find it again and if I bookmark my essentials in the online help, then that saves them even if I create a new Windows user - which I'm prone to doing when they get in a knot.

Thanks
Adrian
