FH7 Diagram> boxes>conditions+

Post by amuse » 01 Feb 2022 14:43

I have just put FH7 on a new computer (running W10 in Virtual Machine) and I'm in the process of importing Gedcom files fom my old machine running W7 and FH 6.2.7. So far so good, I have not deleted anything on the old machine, but just played about with FH7 on the new machine.

I had just about got may head around (I won't say mastered) using icons in diagrams to denote BMD and census entries in FH6 , but in FH7 I seem to have got a census icon (as I intended) under certain boxes but when I went to edit the icon, the expresion does not show up in the 'condition' box, although the one I set (%INDI.BIRT.DATE%) does.
Help please! What have I done wrong?

Migrating from PC to PC needs much more than GEDCOM files to be transferred, e.g. Media files and custom settings such Record Flag driven Icon Conditions.

It is NOT advisable to try and migrate from FH v6.2.7 directly to FH v7.0.9 which has many pitfalls.
You should install FH v6.2.7 on the new PC, migrate everything, and then upgrade to FH v7.0.9.

Please see the FHUG Knowledge Base Family Historian Copy and Migration Guide and follow all its advice carefully.

Thanks Mike, I found the copy and migration guide too late. I have my media files embedded so they were included with the exported Gedcom files. One other problem, even if I had done the upgrades as per the guide is that I have mislaid the earlier discs, but fortunately I had kept a separate note of the activation codes.
I'm not too worried about custom settings as I generally stick to the default settings, I'll just have to type in the conditions, and I will have to change the icons anyway as I know the .bmf ones I designed won't work. (Incidentally the 'Help' has not been changed to mention the change from .bmp to .emf files for icons in V7).

Thanks for your interest.

You only need the FH V6 upgrade disk you purchased and the FH V5 key and FH V6 key to install FH V6.

I am not sure that FH V7 supports embedded Media any more, as that feature was removed from GEDCOM 5.5.1.

Sadly it was the V6 upgrade disc that I couldn't find, it's been sitting on the desk in the origianl V4? book but it got tidied up.

I think I am probably using the wrong terminology I included the media in the gedcom file that I exported using 'Embed Multi Media in Export File'.

I'll follow the instructions religiously when I set up V7 on the laptop, but I'm not sure I'll put it on my current laptop as W10 is running very slowly on it. Works fine with Linux but W10 is a great big pain.

In that case, it may be better to upgrade V6.2.7 to V7.0.9 on the old PC.
Check as far as possible that all is working correctly before migrating to the new PC.

You might do better to copy the Family Historian Projects folder as advised in FHUG KB article.
