Name on property box and Family box the same

Post by Linda Reinfeld » 24 Jan 2022 02:36

My property box name looks good - it's the way I want it.

The name in the family box is not OK. How do I fix that? Actually I don't need the ID number, just Mr before the name.

Thank you for the help.

As far as I can see, the property box shows the person ID by default and cannot be changed.
It is certainly useful for identifying the correct person.
IE, if you had several people of the same name, it is handy to know which one is focused by their unique ID.

As for the Focus window, what don't you like? It is showing you the persons name, and in this case the dashes you have entered for unknown names.
Focus Window options are available from Tools>Preferences...>Focus Window

Neil is mistaken and the Property Box Caption can say whatever you like.
See Tools > Preferences > Property Box > Captions...

I'm not sure the [Record Id] is shown by default but can be added by using [=RecordId()] in the Caption.

Linda, your Name field contains -- /Sharrow/ so -- is the forename and Sharrow is the surname.
They will usually both be displayed wherever the Name is shown.

The Focus Window (family box) does not allow the Name to be customised so if you don't want -- displayed you must delete those two characters from the Name field in the Property Box.

In order to get Mr displayed, I presume you have added that to the Prefix field in the Names & Titles dialogue.
That is quite unconventional because the Sex: Male entry indicates he is a Mr and to be consistent will require the Prefix of everyone to be completed. That becomes a problem for most females because should they be Miss or Mrs or Ms or what?

My apologies Mike, I went to the Cog on the Property box > Customise Property Box and obviously there are options to add/remove fields to that box there. I mistakenly thought the header customisation might be there.

I note in the Captions window, this is the default ( I clicked Reset to make sure I hadn't customised it):

So Linda would need to remove the [=RecordId()] part if she doesn't want the record ID shown.

Neil - like you, I went to the Property box cog wheel to see where I had customized the name (I couldn't remember). It does seem like the natural thing to do.....

Mike - Didn't know the correct words, thanks - Focus Window. Why can't the name on the focus window be modified? There are lots of examples in the genealogical literature where people are referred to as 'Deacon Charles Kingsbury' or 'Widow Elizabeth Curtiss' or 'Rev Josiah Stearns'
Yes, Mr was added by conversion from TMG to the Name Prefix field. This is my convention when I don't know the given name of a male. It certainly looks better than just 'Sharrow' for a name. Looking at it you would not know if it were male or female.
Your statement about a problem for most females - most do not have a prefix, only if I assign one to them, which I do when I do not know their last name. They become Mrs. Beatrice Sargent (nee unknown).

'--' in TMG will not display. I will need to revisit my use of this.

You can get to the Captions settings via the Property Box cog wheel menu by choosing Options...

You will have to ask Calico Pie why the Focus Window names cannot be customized.

However, the Name shown at the top is the person in 'focus' below and is usually very obvious whether they are male on the left or female on the right.

Try the the Edit > Find and Replace... command with just Look in Names ticked and Search for: -- and Replace with: nothing. Leave Confirm replacements ticked until confident just the required change is happening.

Thanks Mike for the suggestion on how to fix '--'.
However I will have to do the fix in TMG as I am constantly transferring my data.

So are you saying that TMG is still your master genealogy database and FH is just a surrogate copy?
i.e. You only ever perform updates in TMG and then import that updated database into FH every so often.

Hi Mike -

My data is not ready at all yet for FH. And a big part of my system is a website. I will be using GedSite, and that is not ready also.

I intend to get FH & GedSite in tip top shape, and migrate once a week to capture the latest data. I don't know how long I will do that - probably until either my TMG system goes belly-up or I get bored with transferring all the time, or I find out I am using FH for most everything.

Thanks for asking.
