Struggling with Code for Fact Sentence

Post by APerson » 23 Jan 2022 20:02

Hi Everyone, I'm a FH newbie (although a long-time genealogy geek) and am struggling to create the code for a sentences for a new fact type I've created. Specifically, I need to document a source, an Ancestry Chart (similar to descendant chart that a cousin sent to me that contains about 80 names). I've created a new fact that I'm calling a "Family History Document" and have spent several hours (literally) trying to figure out the correct code to create the sentence I want. Here's what I've got so far:

I want the sentence to read:

{individual} is listed on a family history document provided by "XXXXX" where "XXXXX" is the value from a template I created (BTW, the template works) from field for "Primary Creator" (see the attached screen capture).

I've now tried everything I can possibly find in the help files, knowledge base, the forum etc. and I must be suffering from analysis paralysis as I simply can't find the solution.

Also, as there are so many people listed on this document, the only way I could find to share this source is to use a plug-in called, "Copy Fact to Chosen Records" - is that the most efficient way to share the same source?

Any help would be GREAT appreciated! Thanks!

I am tempted to say that what you have is a Source document and so should not be entered as a Fact.
That Family Tree Diagram is not an Event that happened to the people listed within, nor is it an Attribute.
Presumably that Family Tree Diagram contains facts such as the Birth and Death dates of each person.
Those are the Events that should be entered against each person and the Source document cited.
You could also cite the Name of each person against that same Source document.
It would be like having a Family Bible in which many BMD dates were recorded.
The Bible is not an Event; it is a Source document that is cited by each of the Event facts.

You're absolutely correct - the term "fact" has thrown me off. At the moment, I haven't entered the data. I figured I'd tackle this as an exercise to help me become familiar with FH. So, far, I remain very impressed with FH although its considerably different than RM.

In my existing db, which I just imported from RM, the old citation is was attached to Name, Birth, and Death Dates. As I mentioned, I'm suffering from analysis paralysis and am attempting to redo the entire citation in FH (it's so old that I haven't look at it in ages and it also was never converted to using my own template. I was (am) being lazy and trying to figure out how to cite three items (name b, and d - if all of the information is there), without having to cut and paste. I noticed the "witness" feature but that doesn't do what I want so I ended up with trying to figure out what next.

Basically, in order to add the info to everyone listed, will I need to cut and paste the source for each individual and each fact?

Thanks!

You could use the Automatic Source Citations feature.
Once the Source Citation is prepared with that feature then every new Fact is automatically given the Citation.
See Automatic Source Citation for details.

Thank you VERY MUCH! Some of the terminology in FH has thrown me for a loop (only because I'm so used to using other software applications for so long) and one I figured out how to use Automatic Source Citation, things went MUCH smoother and very quickly! While I still had to do a fair amount of mouse clicking, it is LIGHT YEARS ahead of RM (which I why I still have some data that I hadn't converted to use my source templates.

I suspect that may need to eventually get my original question answered about the proper code/syntax to pull data from the field values from my templates but, at the moment, I no longer need that informaion.

Thank you!
