V7 Performance Issues

Post by Bleebo001 » 08 Jan 2022 13:04

I am a long term FH User who has been using for about 15 years. I have a large DB with c 25000 records and many sources etc.

I have been really happy with FH up to the most recent version. It was fast and pretty bullet proof.

Ever since upgrading to V7 I have had major performance problems. FH is regularly "polling" and when it does this every 30secs or so it locks the PC until it has finished. It is so bad I am now considering migrating to another package.

I suspect it is down to the web links FH now has which I have no interest in anyway.

Its there any way of optimising FH to improve performance.

Any help appreciated.

Cheers

Bob

What settings do you have for AutoSave and SnapShot?

If by this you mean the 'Hints' you can turn those off in Tools > Preferences.

Autosave every 5 mins, snapshot set to auto.

Autosave doesn't really need to be that frequent. I have mine set to every 30 min, and FH will always prompt you if you try to close it with unsaved material.

Performance is significantly enhanced if the project is on a fast SSD drive. If your PC is set up with your Documents folder on a slower mechanical drive, is there an option to move it to an SSD?

Unfortunately, later versions of software with more features do often come with a performance hit. FH7 is noticeably slower to load than FH6 on the same PC, and complex reports tend to take longer to generate. However, FH is by no means alone in this. The RM forums are full of comments about the speed of RM8 relative to RM7.

Hi there, I have a five year old Windows 7 pc with an i3 processor which runs FH7 fractionally more slowly than FH6 with autosave set to 5min and snapshots set to auto. I have the same size database/sources etc. - not many photos (about 700) and no source images. My PC suffers no locking up at all. I would suggest that maybe your FH7 installation isn't happy and maybe you should consider backing up your database, uninstalling FH7 and reinstalling it and see if that helps? Other than that (and I know it's a big ask) is reinstalling Windows as Windows always slows over time - but that's Windows for ya!

Have you checked your hard drive for disk errors?
