Census Icons

Post by mikegscoles » 06 Jan 2022 15:44

I have just started using FH 7.0.9 and preparing for the 1921 census.
As with my previous versions I have used expressions for showing the icons in diagrams.
When I enter the Expression in Diagram Options and then choose Edit Features and then Icon I get the opportunity to hit Select for the appropriate Icon however the choice/file shown is completely different from my usual selection of Icons none of which are appropriate.
My original Expressions and Icons for previous census' still continue to display correctly as expected and I cannot see which directory and file is being used for the correct Icons nor how I can point the Edit Features/Icon/Select to the Icon file which I have been using to date which includes the .bmp file for the 21 Census. (Jane's files)

Help would be much appreciated.

Mike.

FH V7 has enforced the longstanding advice to put downloaded custom Icons in with the standard Icons at:
C:\ProgramData\Calico Pie\Family Historian\Icons\
That way they can all be backed up together rather than being scattered in various drive folders.

FH V7 prefers .emf Icon files but if you are happy with .bmp Icons then you can continue using them.

If you can locate the folder where Jane's Icons are held, then copy that into the FH Icons folder above.
Then the Edit Features/Icon/Select will find them.
I suggest you alter all your expressions to use the FH Icons folder copy and delete the original.
If you cannot find Jane's Icons then download them again from Jane’s Census and Certificate Icons.

ALTERNATIVELY, the standard FH Icons have a set of Number Labels in different colours very similar to Jane's Icons.
So perhaps just swap to using them and discard Jane's Icons download completely.

Thanks for your prompt reply.
I do not have a path: C:\ProgramData\Calico Pie\Family Historian\Icons\
I do have C:\Program Files (x86)\Calico Pie\Family Historian Pdf. Adding \Icons and associated .bmp files has no effect as my problem remains the same.

Until now my path is: C:\Family Historian Projects\Program Data\Icons. That has worked OK before updating to the latest FH v7.

Perhaps I need to start again and sort out my file structure before upgrading to v7. Your help would be vital.

The folder I specified does exist. See the FHUG Knowledge Base advice Family Historian Program Data Folder which explains how to reveal it as it is typically hidden.

Do not touch C:\Program Files (x86)\Calico Pie\Family Historian\ files.
Please carefully undo anything you have changed there.

As I said, prior to FH V7 you could put your custom Icons anywhere but that poses problems when you need to move to a new PC as the path to the Icons will almost certainly change and they will vanish from your Diagrams.

Now FH V7 demands that all Icons are in the folder I specified, which is always the same on any PC.
So you could move your C:\Family Historian Projects\Program Data\Icons to the folder I specified and reassign the .bmp Icons to the Box Expressions.

Why is the ALTERNATIVE strategy that I suggested not a simpler suitable solution?

Having already upgraded to FH V7 there is no way back to FH V6 unless you have full backups of not only your Projects but also the C:\ProgramData\Calico Pie\Family Historian\ and Windows Registry settings for FH V6.

Many thanks once again.

Now all working as expected. I have continued with Jane's icons as I prefer them and I can't see how to resize the .emf icons.

Hopefully when I get to entering the 21 census' I will not run into any more problems.

To resize .emf Icons use Diagram > Options > Dimensions > More Dimensions... > Icon size ...

Have you seen the various discussion threads regarding the 1921 Census developments?
