Printing descendant reports

Post by Johnr65 » 04 Jan 2022 16:22

Since the last update for FH7 I find that when I press 'Publish' the report shows but there is no 'print' option? :?:

It's still there, just below Go To Page.
Perhaps it's off the bottom of your screen?

That is probably the case Lorna but I can't get down to the bottom of the page? :?: :?:

Have you changed the scale of the display on your screen?
Are you having the same problem with any other windows, either within FH or in other software?

I'm sure there is nothing in the latest version of FH which has changed this.

I'm sure that the latest update has changed the way printing is done. I've done nothing to the program and this is the first time that I've tried to print a report!
The only way I can do it now is via the file, print option which is most unsatisfactory! Is it possible to roll back the update to how it was before Calico messed it up?

Have you changed your font size? If so, does the problem still exist if you revert to the default?

I find that if the window height is reduced, the buttons in the right-hand pane disappear behind the "Page Records" list.

I find exactly the same if I drag the bottom edge of the window up, the buttons start to disappear, with no way to access them other than dragging the window back down. Those buttons have fixed positions, the margin doesn't adapt to the change in size of FH window.
I note also that if you change the screen to above 100% Display (using my laptop as an example) - right click on Desktop > Display Settings > Scale, causes an issue with buttons.
If I set this to 125% (I only have 100 and 125% as options), I can then see less buttons on the reports and no option to show more.

Not from where you probably are now. I always download and save the installation file prior to upgrading. I use this in combination with a simple batch file that does a one-click copy of all FH settings (which is all you need for simple restoration to the same PC, and is much easier to use than the more comprehensive plugin). With these, I can quickly and easily restore FH to the exact state it was in prior to upgrade.

I’ve never needed to do it since the beta testing, but like any insurance policy, it’s reassuring knowing it is there if I need it.

Including the Registry settings?

Including the Registry settings. The only issue I found when testing was that you might have to re-enter the registration details. But the caveat is same user, same FH version, and same PC. The full plugin should be used for all other scenarios.

I also have this issue, but only when Family Historian is on my laptop screen. As I have 2 other screens attached, I drag it up and can then have access to the buttons. But, there is no scroll down to see them, and this has definitely happened on one of the recent updates (but I don't know which one).

I did not change the scale and my laptop is on 125% (150% is the recommended setting).

Johnr65 and Coolgarra,

Have either of you created a bug report with Calico Pie?

I registered a Support Ticket, but I have discovered something interesting (when preparing information for another issue I was going to raise).

I had changed the size of the text on the Property Box to Very Large (when sharing my screen during a training session). Once this was changed back to Medium, the issue goes away, 'unless' the 'Enable Automatic Source Citations' panel is activated.

I will update my Support Ticket, but I think it is still an issue as a scroll-bar should activate to allow access to the missing buttons.

Here's the response:
Thank you for reporting this. The fact that some buttons do not display when there is little space, is not a mistake. It is by design.

Everything that you can do with the buttons on the Report Window pane, you can do by clicking options on the "Report" menu (except Print and Printer Setup, which you can access by clicking Print and Print Setup on the File menu). The "Report" menu is only available when the Report Window is active. There is an equivalent menu, "Book", when the Book window is active.

If you display the Report Window on a small screen or in a small window, there will not be enough room for all the buttons. The same applies if you make the font size bigger. This will make the buttons bigger too, and there won't be room for all of them. In that case, buttons at the bottom of the pane are dropped, as needed.

It is true that the method of arranging buttons on the pane is not working as well as it could, and this will be addressed in the next update. Also, the "Page Records" list will be reduced in size if space is tight, to allow more buttons to be displayed.

Ah yes. Perhaps this explains why Johnr65 was seeing the problem? He would normally see the extra buttons, even with a laptop screen display set at 125%, but perhaps on this occasion he had the 'Enable Automatic Source Citations' panel activated and taking up space at the top.
