Research Notes Displaying Named List

Post by BakerJL75 » 26 Jun 2021 20:01

I have a named list of Ancestors. I have a research note for Mary Doe. Mary is on the named Ancestor list.
I have configured a column in the Research Notes Records window for the Ancestor list. However, neither Mary nor any other ancestors have a tick mark in the Research Notes Records Window. I have inserted an individual link to Mary in the Research Note. Why doesn't Mary have a tick mark? I'm probably missing something obvious. Does anyone have any ideas? When I look through my Research Notes, mostly todo's I'd like to be able to tell which ones pertain to ancestors so I can give them priority.
Thanks,
Jackie

I'm not clear on how you are associating the Named List with the Research Notes.

Exactly how have you configured the column in the Research Notes Records window? What is its Expression?

Where would you expect a tick mark against Mary to appear?

Are you requesting that if a Research Note has a link to anyone who is also in the Named List that a tick appears in the Research Notes Records window column?

Are you expecting to have more than one link to a person in any one Research Note?
Will there be links to other records in a Research Note?

I think what you are requesting may be difficult.

I've posted screen shots of what I wanted to do, but now realize it won't work. So unless you are curious, no need to spend time on this. This is how I set it up for the Individuals records:
Individuals.png
Individuals.png (401.61 KiB) Viewed 2476 times
The where used Plugin shows the research note record "attached" to the individual.
Where used.png
Where used.png (53.57 KiB) Viewed 2476 times
But the same thing does not work for research notes

Since Ancestors "List Membership" was available in the configuration tool, I assumed it would work. But now that I think about it, FH has no way to know what type of records the list contains. So if the list contained research notes, then it would work. I was just thinking it would be a quick and easy way to know which Research Notes (Tasks) I wanted to work on first. But Priority does that as well, so not worth spending time on.

Plus, I figured out how to add an Ancestor's column and use GetLabeledText to Display Y or nothing as long as I make an "Ancestors: Y" line in the research note. I usually know if it's an ancestor when I'm adding a new research Note. I'll just need to edit existing Notes.
Thanks,
Jackie

Jackie,
The solution I use to address your problem involves two steps.

1. Assign a unique ID to each indivual, one that you can tell at a glance if they are a direct ancestor. In my case I use a system based on the ahnentaffel number of direct ancestors, with suffixex added to denote their children. E.g. J00256 is a dirct ancestor, and J00432ab is a grandchild ( it has 2 suffixes) of direct ancestor J00432.

2. Prefix all you research notes with the custom ID of each individuual involved.
E.g. “J00256: Where was he in 1891” or “J1256: Where did he marry?”

This is useful because a) As the research note is prefixed by ID, you can sort on it. b) you can tell at a glance if the note refers to a direct ancestor.

Jackie, the =IsInList() function knows what record to look for by the data ref in its 1st parameter.
That is often left blank as in your screenshots, but in that case actually defaults to %INDI% or %_RNOT% respectively, and thus those records are checked.

Now if there is only one Individual record link in the Research Note then its data ref is %_RNOT.TEXT._LINK_I%
So =IsInList( %_RNOT.TEXT._LINK_I>%, "Ancestors" ) should work.
