Hello,
Family Historian is a new app that I have just obtained, and I am getting to know the basics.
Question:
How do I delete a research note?

If you want to delete a note in its entirety:

From the menu, choose View > Research Notes. You will see a list of your Research Notes. Select the one you want to delete and use the Delete key on your keyboard.

If you want to delete several notes, the techniques at Delete One or Many Records will all work.

If you just want to unlink it from (say) an Individual, go to the Notes tab of an Individual's Property Box and use the big red X to unlink it. The note itself will not be deleted, just unlinked from the individual.

Have you found the KnowledgeBase yet, in particular Key Features for Newcomers?

Welcome to the FHUG.

To delete any record use the Records Window, open the appropriate tab, select the record and hit the keyboard Delete key or use the Edit > X Delete command.

If not all the record type tabs are displayed, use Tools > Preferences > Records Window and set them all to Always show.
That is one of the tips in the FHUG Knowledge Base Key Features for Newcomers.

I was expecting to be able to right-click on the note and see a context-sensitive list of options.

I didn't mention I'm using V7 of the app on a Virtual machine (Parallels and Win 10)
It took a bit of working out, how to invoke the delete key. (fn-> CR)

I am essentially an Apple Mac user, and finding my way around a Win 10 app a bit confusing.

Is there a section in the help for a Mac OS user using a VM such as Parallels?

Not in the Help. The KnowledgeBase has information on installing on a VM (Running Family Historian on a Virtual Machine) -- it says V6 but it should also apply to V7. It has a little advice on actually using the product in a VM but not a lot, because AIUI most things are the same as in native Windows. (Which doesn't help you if you're not used to native windows, I realise!) One of our more experienced Mac users will (I hope) be along to add more advice.

I run V7 on a VM but using VirtualBox not Parallels. I am afraid I have no experience of Parallels. VirtualBox maps the Mac's keyboard so Delete and right click work fine, the only thing to remember in Windows is that you use Ctrl instead of Cmd and the letters that go with those keys is the same in Windows or Mac. Familiarise yourself with the keyboard combinations for Windows and FH and just substitute use Ctrl when you are in the Windows virtual environment. There may be a Parallels setting to map the Mac keyboard to Windows it would be worth checking.

I stand corrected, deleting a note requires fn+del. When running FH on Win10 in Parallels VM.


Also, I now find I can right-click on a note and I see a list of options.
But disappointed not to see included, edit or delete.
Not having basic items such as these in a context-sensitive list, increases 'workflow friction'.
But that is only my view on things.

If you're used to using right-click context menus for everythings, I see your point. However double-click for Edit and Delete key for delete are very common in Windows.

On the whole, I'm very impressed with the app.
It will be a fairly steep learning curve for me to get to grips with using it.
I am impressed by the comprehensive help documentation.
Although very much an Apple Mac person, and have, to date, used Mac-only apps for my genealogy research, they are all let down by the lack of comprehensive inbuilt research documentation tools.

This post is going away from the original post,
but one final question I have:
Do I import my work done in another app and spend time 'cleaning up' the person facts,
Or start afresh?
My sources and citations look like being the biggest problem.

Numbers of persons in the full tree ~ 350.
My great grand-parents tree ~20 persons.

What product would you be importing from? I'm probably going to defer to Tatewise on this, as he's an 'Import expert' but he'll need to know the starting point.

Family Tree Maker 2019 exporting as GEDCOM 5.5.1

The starting point is the FHUG KB on Importing to Family Historian that has dedicated advice for Import from Family Tree Maker (FTM).

There is nothing to be lost by experimenting with a GEDCOM & Media import.
If you are uncomfortable with working from that import then you can delete it and start over from scratch.
But even if you just keep the family tree and delete all the Source Citations that will save a lot of data entry time.
Many users here have reviewed their tree and reworked the Source Citations and cleaned up the facts.
