Have I done this correctly - Source & Cits

Post by Kylie » 23 Apr 2021 04:52

Hi

I'm still wrapping my head around source & cit entering. Each time I give it a try, I believe I get it more correct than the last time.

This time I believe I may have got it 90% correct. So if you wouldn't mind checking the 2 images of a Baptism Source & Cit I entered & letting me know if I'm getting close.

However the 3rd image has made me question myself. The last source with a blue star, the title includes the person's name, I realise I can edit his name out. However when I tried using it as source for another baptism, obviously changing all the source information to the new person eg: William, all of Arthur's information in his profile was replaced with Williams.

I did read about cloning a source & using Automatic Source's.

I may not having been using the Automatic Source correctly - I clicked "Auto" and got the yellow bar, I clicked enabled, I clicked "select" & I picked a source, clicked primary, close.... nothing happened to the record that was open. I pondered a bit. I did try to read the help but honestly by that point my brain was turning to mush. I did try editing the citation from the 'Auto source' bar but still nothing happened.

The only way I was able to get the "Automatic Source" to attach to the profile was to open the "Source" window & add a citation (which gave me source records) & when that attached it wasn't the source that I picked from Auto Source.
So I'm guessing Automatic Sourcing isn't quite as automatic as I thought it was lol. And from what I've read on the forums it's mixed bag of those who do use it & don't. Honestly - I'd really rather not use Auto Source. It feels easier & quicker to use the Manual (?) Source method.

Getting back to the blue starred Source title. So I know I can edit the title to say simply "Parish Baptisms" or "Parish Baptisms of X Town" but if I clone that Source then use it for another profile & edit the cloned source I end up with 2 Source records called "Parish Records". Not being able to tell the difference between them & they'd be used only for that one or two profiles. So my thought was if I named it eg: Parish Baptisms of Essex, England but in the main source window I don't include Name, Date, Parish, etc but edit the citation only to include all that information. Instead of both the source window & citation (text from source?) having duplicate information. But doesn't that defeat the purpose of Sourcing correctly if I did that way?

I'd be very interested in seeing screen caps of how other's set out their sources & cits.

Thanks so very much, sorry if it sounds like I spoke in circles, it certainly felt like I was.

Kylie :)

I had intentions of including 5 images, Census & Bapt (source & cit windows) & Source Records - but I was only able to attach 3

Essentially, everything looks OK for the Source Citation for the Baptism of Arthur Henry Burton.

Where you have gone astray is trying to use that same Source record for somebody else.
That is not how it works for such Method 1 'splitter' Source Citations.
All the details in that Source record are just for Arthur Henry Burton.

To record another Baptism for William you must start from scratch with a new Prepared Citation for his Baptism Event.
That new Source record will have his name in the Title and contain his details in Text From Source.
That is how Method 1 'splitter' Source Citations work; one for each captured source document.

The only thing I would add is that since Baptism documents usually give the names of the parents and sometimes the date of birth of the child and the occupation of the father, there would usually be more than one Citation associated with those other facts.

Automatic Source Citations will automatically add a Source Citation whenever any of those facts are added by you.

You should not edit the Title of template derived Source records as it should be composed by Source Template rules.

Thanks Mike :) Now I understand how Auto Source works! Still not ready to use it though. Would like to improve my sourcing & citation understanding skills first.

I suggest you practice your Source Citation skills in the Family Historian Sample Project or a Copy of your master Project.

As part of that please experiment with Ancestral Sources (AS) that can capture most popular source documents in a consistent style and consistency is the key to keeping your records organised. AS has many custom options just like FH.

Even if you add Source Citations by hand, it is worth being consistent with AS so you can easily switch to using it without needing to reorganise your records.
