Numbered Lists in Forum Posts

Post by Beerbadger »

Hi,
New user question - how do I get a numbered list in a forum post ?
I have tried pressing the numbered link button and the list button. I understand that they are presenting me with an opening and closing html tag within which to type my point. However, I type my point and then newline to make the second numbered point and again for a third, pushing the close list tag, [/list], ahead of the text. When I preview the post it has only put a bullet or number against the first line and not the subsequent ones.
I have figured out how to get numbers or letters or bullets, but not how to get a second and third line etc.
I have looked at the minimal help that pops up if you hover over the icon for a list and it doesn't help - [ list=][*]First point[/list]". What is the [*] intended to mean and how do I get a second numbered or bulleted line?
Thanks

Code: Select all

[list=1]
[*]Item 1
[*]Item 2
[/list]
gives
  1. Item 1
  2. Item 2
and

Code: Select all

[list]
[*]Item 1
[*]item 2
[/list]
gives
  • Item 1
  • item 2

I struggled with this and other similar issues, as the action buttons above where I'm typing now are often incomplete and misleading. The forum uses something called BBCode, and if you click on the link, it gives you a very readable basic formatting guide (including how to create links with specific text just like this one!).

Did anyone think to investigate the FAQ link near the top of the page?

Yes I did, Mike. Possibly because it's on my tofo list to edit at some point to remove all the noise there

Unfortunately, that’s a good example of the type of sarcastic, sneering comment that creeps into this forum rather more often than it should. If you do follow the link, all you get is a brief description of what BBCode is, and a vague reference to more details “on the posting page” (whatever that is). It still doesn’t answer the OP’s question.

Just remember it was new to you once - and as a former boss of mine told me very early in my career - there’s no such thing as a dumb question, just dumb answers...

IMO that FAQ page as it stands needs a lot of work before I'd be happy pointing people there.

Each icon in the toolbar above the compose window has a description which pops up when you place your cursor on it.
I would say that these are very minimal and could be expanded on in the FAQ to make it easier to know how to code them as in Helen's examples.
