Is there a data reference for the citation note? I've looked but haven't found one.

It depends in what context. Where have you looked?
Usually, wherever you need to enter the data ref there is a Data Reference Assistant button to help you.

If it is a whole record Citation then use:
%INDI.SOUR.NOTE2%
If it is a Fact Query then use:
%FACT.SOUR.NOTE2%
If it is in a Source Template format then use:
{%CUR~CITN.NOTE2%}

Source Template Definitions Format templates are one of the few that have no Data Ref Assistant.
You could report that deficiency to CP.

None of those did what I wanted. Or maybe I used them incorrectly. I use GedSite for web pages. It is quite happy to make a valid link out of web addresses in a fact note. Or other notes, I think. What I was hoping to do, was use the note field on the citation to do the same thing. There is a similar discussion at viewtopic.php?f=32&t=18926&p=110034&hil ... rl#p110034. In my citation list on a web page I want to end up with something like

"Maryland, Church Records, 1668-1995," database with images, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org : 10 October 2019), > image 1 of 1; multiple denominations and churches, Maryland. https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1 ... cc=2385204.

The short, generic link in the actual citation and a longer actual link to the document on the web.

I assumed, incorrectly, that if I put a URL in the Standard Note Field from FH7, and referred to that field in the source template definition, that it would work the same way. But I didn't know what it was called to be able to put it in the source definition. It's not a big deal. I can create a new field, like below, and it will do the same thing. Here are the fields I'm referring to:

I created the field called Citation Link, and GedSite happily uses it. I thought it would be easier to use the Note field. At this point it's curiosity as well as need. I don't want to take up anyone's time with this. I'm still debating if I want to do it, because keeping up with changing links over time could be a pain.

Jackie, there are a number of issues there.

Please post the Format templates you are using so we can see what might be going wrong.
I think {%CUR~CITN.NOTE2%} should work.

I notice that Citation Link is the only metafield defined in your example.
As a general rule, to work with GedSite, it may be best to avoid metafields. Ask John Cardinal for what he advises.
Are you proposing to work mainly with Generic Sources or Templated Sources?
The discussion you referenced makes no mention of exporting to other products which imposes added constraints.

I presume the Citation Link is a URL type of metafield?
In the Note fields do you use the Rich Text Link option to format the URL?

Your last point about the long-term validity of URL is also important. It is Ok to record the URL of where the source was found but it is advisable to include a downloaded copy of the details in case the URL changes.

I got it working in FH7. And touching base with John Cardinal about GedSite. And I always download / screenshot the information.
