FH v7.02 not printing

Post by Jeff Shaw » 13 Mar 2021 14:26

I have found that FH has started printing all blank pages both to printer and pdf
This appears to be caused by the latest windows update on 13/03/2021 -
Cumulative update for Windows 10 Version 20H2 for x64 based systems KB5000802
Uninstalling this update fixes the problem
I have the latest Nova pdf 7.7 driver from FH
It has been reported to FH
I would suggest NOT uninstalling this update as windows security will be compromised
This problem will most likely be fixed with a later windows or FH update
You can carry on using FH - just not printing till fix is found

Jeff,

Welcome to the FHUG. Unfortunately, pdf printing in FH7 is badly broken (viewtopic.php?f=32&t=18533). I noted a recent change with getting blank pdf documents, and I've just confirmed that it is the same when printing directly. However, printing charts/diagrams still works correctly, both direct to printer and to pdf. It's only text reports that are b****red.

Hopefully, this will be fixed in a future Windows update, but we are dependent on Calico Pie for fixing the rest of the broken pdf printing. Going via an RTF file works well for some reports, but isn't suitable for all.

I'm posting this on behalf of my non-techy mother.

Family Historian PDF is/can be extremely buggy and often doesn't work. My fix for this was to install CutePDF years ago. This worked absolutely fine until the March Windows Update KB5000802 was installed last night.

I experienced the exact same problem last night after KB5000802 was installed. Reports would not print to a physical printer, nor would they print using either Family Historian PDF or CutePDF. Strangely, diagrams would print without any trouble!

The solution was to uninstall KB5000802. As soon as I did this, everything started working normally. This update has been causing issues worldwide with various different printers and software, up to and including blue-screen crashes ever since it was released. Microsoft are already aware of this and are working on a fix.

If you really need to print a report - either as a PDF or on paper, then you have no option but to uninstall the update. It will re-install itself again unless you pause updates or Microsoft pull it from the update queue as they have done with previous buggy updates.

Stratton52, which version of FH are you/your mother using -- we can't tell from your profile.

(Click your name top right, and the Profile and then Edit Profile to record the version so you don't have to keep telling us :D )

"Save as RTF File" still works, so you can save the report as an RTF, and print from within your preferred word processor (Word, LibreOffice, etc). It's not ideal for reports that are image-rich, but generally isn't a bad option. It is even preferred sometimes, as it gives you more fine control over the final appearance, and generates much smaller files than the broken native pdf printing in FH.

I too had problems printing to PDF when my last Windows update was KB5000802. Since then I have installed more recent Windows updates that have cured the problem.
