Teeny tiny icons and Navigation Bar

Post by janelucas » 13 Jan 2021 06:21

I am a new user with the trial Version 7. So far it looks like great software. I do have a big problem with the tiny size of the icons. I have figured out how to adjust the size of the text of the data, but the icons are so tiny that sometimes I don't even notice they are there, or I have to mouse over to read them. The other area with the same problem is the Navigation Bar on the left. For a long time I didn't even know it was there, even then it was too small and narrow to be useful.

Strangely, the icons in "The Tour" are normal size and I can read them and the Navigation Bar is also useful. They look good.

I am using a Dell laptop with Windows 10 that is about a year old and is an Inspiron 13 7000 series. I tried changing the display settings at the Windows settings area, but it changes it for all the other programs when this is the only program that has this problem.

I really, really want this to work! There must be a way and I can't be the only one with this problem. Thanks so much for your help.

Have you looked at Tools->Preferences->Display and then the toolbar size and some of the other settings on that screen?

Thanks so much, Nick. Yes, I already have it set to Big, and Below Bar and that helped a bit. I have a screenshot as an example but I spent an hour and a half last night trying to reduce the file size so I could attach it here. I'll have another go at it now. Thanks again, Nick.

Hi all.
I have what sounds like a similar issue. I'm in the trial period for FH7 and running on my Dell XPS 15 laptop that runs at 3840x2160 resolution. The Navigation Bar on the left is tiny, the icons in the Property Box are tiny. Basically everything is not scaling at all.
Changing the Windows 10 settings doesn't help, so wondering if there are any ideas?
Not a deal breaker but annoying.
Cheers!

Have you tried adjusting the individual app scaling properties for Family Historian in the Windows property box? See image below

There's also at least one app that does something similar for individual applications you may want (need) to use at a different resolution to the desktop: http://www.brianapps.net/sizer/userguide.html

Thanks. I tried all the Windows DPI compatibility settings, but no change. That Sizer program apparently doesn't work with 64-bit Windows.

Could you post a screenshot showing your entire screen? Use the ATTACHMENTS link below your replay to attach it, and choose the PLACE INLINE option.

With a 3840x2160 resolution, everything is going to be really small. see here

I made a screenshot to show you using one of the pages from the Sample Database, but it is a 558kb png file format, and I get a message that it is too large to attach.

Is there an easy way to shrink the attachment so I can show it here? I have Paint 3D, and I also just downloaded the old standby IrfanView. Problem is that I've forgotten how to do it!

Also, does anyone know what the maximum size is for uploading attachments?

Thanks so much in advance, and also I'm relieved that I'm not the only one with the problem!

@janelucas, in IrfanView open the png, use Image > Resize/Resample... and choose Half then save.
The maximum size is 256KB as stated in FHUG KB Forum Usage Tips under Attachments.

My desktop monitor is 4500 * 3000 and after changing various display settings I decided to live with the few downsides to high resolution. Attached an image with the Navigation Bar and I have no problem with that but the highlighted Source Rec column with loss of the closing ] is an annoyance!

Is this the same issue as FH7 Source Rec - Column Width (18774)?

It certainly looks like the same issue doe the Source Rec column.
But that is different to the overall issue with tiny icons that seems like higher resolution displays. My laptop is 4 years old so it's not that cutting edge :)

It is the same issue and therefore a hi-dpi problem at root. There are even smaller icon issues on the user interface, not hi-dpi related, but made even worse in that instance e.g. Edit Media Item > row of icons under the image thumbnail. I end up missing then slowly moving the pointer to the green 'Open in Editor/Player' button! The fix is with Calico Pie adjusting the UI.
