Can I use a different sentence template for a specific occupation?
If a person had no occupation because they died before reaching working age, I show the occupation as 'None', so I can easily distinguish them from people who reached working age but I don't know their occupation. This appears in narrative reports as 'He/she was a None'. Is it possible to specify that for a specific value the sentence is different, eg 'He/she had no occupation'? I can't think of an elegant way to get round 'was a ...'. The nearest I can think of is replacing 'None' with 'child who died before reaching working age', but at the moment that is my plan B. I occasionally use None for people who were not children (eg an upper class lady who didn't work), but I can easily write a query to weed those out.

You cannot make the global Tools > Fact Types > Sentence Template conditional.
On the Facts tab, you can select the Occupation fact and in its Sentence box at the bottom use the right-hand droplist and choose Exclude Sentence. That will exclude the sentence for just that Occupation fact from Narrative reports.
Alternatively, right-click the Occupation fact and choose Fact Flags > Private. That will automatically exclude that Occupation fact from all reports whose Report > Options > Privacy tab has Hide all private facts ticked, which is the default.
