Slow save on network share

Post by shoshk » 05 Jan 2021 18:48

I'm not sure if this is the right place to post this. I'm hoping somebody else has dealt with this issue.

My husband and I are both working with the same databases (not at the same time).

Up to now, we have stored them on Dropbox.

This week, I moved our databases to a network share (so that they would sit in the same place that our other databases -- Access, RM, etc -- are located).

The share sits on my computer and is shared with him. It works, however, save times on his computer are intolerably long, about 25 seconds (our gedcom is about 30,000 KB).

I've tried several suggestions gleaned from the internet, but haven't been able to achieve any improvement.

I would really like to keep all our databases together, but my husband is complaining bitterly about the slow save times.

Does anybody have any suggestions?

It's worth remembering that FH loads your Gedcom into memory, so when saving it will be moving whole 30Mb to the other computer. Also I would check the wifi connection if his computer is connected that way.

If you have a lot of media it could be the thumbnail cache is slowing things down so you could turn that off in preferences.

It is worth taking a look at a NAS drive rather than a network share on your own computer. These have advantages in that you can also access the data when away from home if required. Also check your and his network connections wifi bands go for 5ghz connection for wifi if possible. Also check what your computer is actually doing when he is trying to save, your network traffic and you saving something to the same disk will impact his performance.

I have my FH data on a NAS drive on a hard-wired LAN and I find v7 will often freeze during a save. Its only a few seconds for a 16M file but a bit irritating when I'm doing data entry.

Given this is new to v7, fingers crossed it will improve in an upgrade

I haven't worked with NAS drives.

My husband told me yesterday that while I was taking my nap, he had no problem with save times. Apparently, the fact that I'm working on my computer has a definite effect on performance. I'm wondering if a NAS drive would help with that.

It looks like I've found yet another item to add to my 'check it out' list. :)

Yes a NAS drive would definitely help with that in that you both write data over your network so it will be the speed of your network connection that will dictate how fast the data is written rather than if you computer is doing something else. You can buy a cheap single disk NAS for under £100 but you are better off getting a 2 disk one and mirroring the drives so it stores a copy of your data on each physical drive.

Hi Colin,

I took a look at NAS drives. Here in Israel, they are rather expensive. Perhaps I will set up a file server instead. My husband is due for a new computer; he's using my old computer, purchased in 2012. It's still going strong, but 8 years is pretty old for a desktop. I'd rather invest in a new computer for him. The old computer should work quite nicely as a server.

Shosh

That sounds like a good compromise.
