Adding media to records with generic sources in FH7

Post by SpencerDudeUK » 01 Jan 2021 13:34

I am finding this topic very confusing in FH7. I am both a splitter and a lumper, depending on the type of record. For instance, I create a source for each certificate (BMD), etc., but lump census records under a generic source (1841 Census, etc.). In version 6, I could add the generic census source, then attach the individual census to that record by selecting 'Source Record Media'. This didn't add it to the Source, just the record - all fine.
Now, despite reading the Knowledge Base article 'Citing Sources: Method 1 and Method 2', I cannot seem to add an image to a generic source without it becoming part of the source, thus getting added to every other example of that source. It's not clear to me which actions I should be taking to achieve what I need. I'm also confused as to whether there's a difference between 'Source' and 'Citation', since you add a Citation, but find it in the list of Sources.??
Hopefully, this is not as clear as mud, and someone can help - it's probably obvious once you know, but I'm struggling...
Thanks in advance :)

The concepts of Citation and Source have not radically changed over FH V5, V6 & V7.

The Source is the Source record that is listed in the Records Window on the Sources tab.

The Citation is attached to the Fact and links to the Source record.

In Method 1 'splitter' you would usually link any Media to Source record.
In Method 2 'lumper' you would usually link any Media to the Citation.
The term generic Source is nothing to do with Method 1 or Method 2, but refers to the FH V6 text style of Source records versus the FH V7 style of Templated Source records that you can ignore for the moment.

What has changed in FH V7 is the yellow Sources For pane.
The list of Source records at the top that the Citation links to is the same as in FH V6.
But the Source and Citation details have been merged into a new floating Citation Window.
You open that by double-clicking the Source Citation entry in the yellow pane or the Edit Source Citation button below.
The Citation tab shows Source record details at the top and Citation details at the bottom.
The Media tab can show Source Record Only or Citation-specific Only or both sets of Media.
The + Add Media button can also add to either.
So in Method 1 'splitter' you would Add to Source Record and in Method 2 'lumper' Add to Citation.

OK. Thanks for the quick response. I was indeed getting confused between 'Source' and 'Citation'. I was adding the media to the Source record instead of the Citation - the Citation being the 'instance' of the generic source (in my terms).
Anyway, I get it now, and it works as expected.
I don't like the Citation window, though - much preferred the old window you now have to double-click to open. I suppose there must be an advantage, but I can't see it... :)
Thanks again

Users have split opinions over that floating Citation Window.
You don't have to click to open it every time, as it is a floating window that stays open, and automatically updates to whatever Source Citation you choose.
One advantage is that you can update both the Citation and Source record details in one window, whereas in FH V6 you had to update Citation details in the yellow pane of the Individual record Property Box and then separately open the Source record Property Box to update its details.

OK, thanks.
I suppose I'm a bit old school (in my 70s) and don't like too many changes. I like FH7 very much, and will get used to the different way it works.
Thanks for your patience :)
