Research Notes and Evernote/OneNote

Post by gsward » 24 Dec 2020 16:40

The layout and functionality of our Research Notes now (not surprisingly) resemble Evernote and OneNote Notes and Pages. Especially now that we have RTF editing and the ability to link between Research Notes.

I would like to consolidate all my research in one tool and I would prefer that to be FH. The slight problem is that FH is not quite so portable on a phone or tablet which is where Evernote and OneNote win. Currently, I prefer OneNote as there is no limit on the number of devices and nor a monthly upload limit.

We did have a plugin Evernote To Do that I have used in the past but it only exported individuals to a Evernote note. That does not work with FH7 and I am not suggesting we immediate update it. Ideally, I am looking for a process to get a Research Note or Notes into OneNote. I have tried OneNote's "Send to OneNote" but that imports it as an image which is not a lot of help.

If you did upgrade the Evernote plugin you could use a tortuous route of FH7 to Evernote (enex file) then import the enex file into OneNote with Microsoft's OneNote importer.

Anyone for any ideas?

Graham

If you want to experiment, I think the plugin only needs minimal changes to run.
Insert @Type: Standard into the header.
Insert iup.SetGlobal("CUSTOMQUITMESSAGE","YES") as penultimate line before main()

It then runs but I don't have Evernote installed to test any further.

To work with Research Note instead of Individual every INDI needs to become _RNOT
But there would need to be other changes to omit INDI subfields and use _RNOT rich text.

Thank you, that is something to play with! I'll need to find a neater way to get into OneNote then.

I have modified the previous plugin so it now works with version 7. Testing though revealed some issues with Evernote. If you are familiar with the recent Evernote upgrade saga, this plugin needs Evernote 6 (Evernote Legacy) to be installed to work. Evernote had a major upgrade to their version 10 and lost a lot of key functionality like the ability to have 'watch folders' for automated imports and the search is partially broken. Evernote relented and now allows you to run both their version 6 and version 10 on the same machine.

When I first ran the new version of the FH Evernote plugin the way the data was displayed in the two versions of Evernote was different, to the point that version 6 did not present the lines in the correct sequence. I discovered that Evernote has taken a disliking to the use of <br /> html tags so I have re-written the template using <div> </div> instead.

I do have a couple of minor issues that I cannot resolve so if anyone has a moment, could they look at the dialogs?

When the first dialog opens the first text field is slightly shorter than the others and centred. If you click help button that next dialog has a large OK button, how do I fix it?

I will then turn to adapting it for Research Notes.

Thanks,

Graham
