Odd display at bottom of citation window

Post by LornaCraig » 20 Dec 2020 15:35

Is anyone else seeing an overlapping display at the bottom of the Citation Window? It resloves itself as the window is widened, but I don't want it that wide. I don't think this is a scaling issue because it is the same on my desktop (100%) and laptop (125%).

Lorna,
Similar occurs at bottom of Resultset pane in the Query window. Too narrow and you lose the result count!

But I never need to have the Query window so narrow that the results count disappears, because most of the columns in the result set diasppear too. And there is no overlapping display in that case. Do you see the same overlapping that I see in the citation window?

Mine looks like this. I can't get the Source media and Citation media text to appear to the left of the buttons at all. If I narrow the citation window either from the left or the right side, the right hand side of the Data Entry Assistant button is progressively cropped.

Thanks. After further experimenting it seems to depend on whether you have added extra customised fields to the main tab of the Citation Window, and whether they are single line or variable. However even when the extra fields are just single line fields so that the text at the bottom displays correctly, it is possible to get the overlapping effect by dragging down the divider between the Source section and the Citation section, which I don't think should happen. Not a major problem but a bit of a nuisance occasionally.

Lorna
If I add a new source I get a clear pane in which to type words.
If I choose an existing source There is overlap within the Pane. The source record at the top is part concealed by the pane for Citation specific details.
The pane is not set tall enough top to bottom, But one can adjust it.
And it is logical that the citation part is in front. Once one has a main source in place, one does not usually want to alter it when one adds a single citation.
If you click on an existing source (in the Person's Event source pane, which I have fixed to the right) the same happens. Though it is pointless making the pane too small as it already conceals a lot.

What is awful is the number of key strokes needed to enter Text from source.
You tap the Text from source tab.
Then a Plus + to add text from source
Then you have to choose whether to add it to the source record or the citation.

Once I get used to where the windows pop up, it seems pretty easy to me.

Unless one wants to add text. Which I frequnetly do from e.g. Wikipedia entries. Or The London Gazette.

The adding Text to source option in V7 is driving me crazy. I dont know if you can help with that? It offers a menu choice of 7 possibilities.
These then offer a further fleeting list of choices and I have failed multiple times to Snip what is on my screen to show you. The choice menus disappear if I move my mouse to select a snip. There is a census list there for many countries.

When I come across a difficulty like this, my response is to ignore it and get on with my work. As I see, with apologies, I did with alternate names last summer. (to which I may return)

But it totally mystifies me why I get offered lists of censuses when wanting to add text?
The add source and add text functions may be getting crossed somewhere?

I ran a query or two and get the number in the result set. Same as Verson 6 Including running Jane's Gedmatch query.

Have you done something to your citation window? I have default citation pane, and don't see any buttons at all in mine

It is the special Prepared Citation Window obtained by clicking Source > View Prepared Citation from main toolbar.

Yes, if I reduced the height of the lower pane by using the middle horizontal splitter bar then I get your effect.
It is another bug.

Gowermick:
If you look at my second post in this topic you will see that I have answered that.

Tatewise: Thanks I will report to Calico Pie.

Evelyn,
The points you are aking about are not really connected to the subject of this topic, but to answer briefly:

The list you are seeing is a list of existing autotext templates which can be used as an aid to recording text in a consistent and tabulated way. If none of the options are relevant to your source just choose <Empty Text>. (You can create custom autotext templates of your own if there is a particular kind of source you use a lot, but that is a separate topic).

At the top of that tab there is a field labelled 'Show:' which by default is set to show both Source record Text and Citation-specific Text. If you only ever want to enter Citation-specific text, set this to 'Citation Specific Only'. Then you won't have to choose which type of text you want to record.

One way to speed things up is to customise the main tab to show the Text from Source field there, so that you don't have to change tabs. That's what I have done, but that is part of the cause of the overlapping display at the bottom of the window!

BTW: I get the problem with default settings if the pane is reduced in height enough, but if more fields are added then it will get worse.

Lorna, Thank you. I didnt know one could customise the source and citation windows. Will do that tomorrow.

I'm sure this is a bug, but I get a similar situation with some programs (particularly FH v6) that have a "popout" window when the popout window is on a 2nd/3rd monitor via a USB3 to HDMI adapter. In my case I am sure it is windows10 or the windows driver as there is no problem when directly connected via the laptop HDMI port.
