Middle names

Post by Gardengirl » 08 Aug 2020 12:35

Hello all, just a tiny question but I can't find the answer anywhere. Is there a setting to ensure that middle names show in the Facts screen? Lots of my people are only distinguishable by their middle names where family names have been passed down through the generations.

For example this would be much clearer if his middle name was included....

In some case that may be possible.
There are advanced settings in the Tools > Fact Types definitions for each fact that govern the Facts tab display.

I suspect you have found the way to Edit facts and via the Roles button Edit witness sentence templates.
In those same dialogues, there is an Advanced... button that offers an Override Template for Facts tab Listings.
See how_to:narrative_report_fact_sentence_templates|> Narrative Report Fact Sentence Templates that shows where the Advanced... buttons are.

So for your Census event Resident Role that Template could be as below and lists the full name:
Listed as a resident in Census of {principal}
Or for your Will event Executor Role:
Named as executor in Will of {principal}

Theoretically, the same technique can be applied to the Marriage event via its Advanced... button, but I cannot get it to work, as it always adds the spouse's short name in addition to whatever Template codes are used. (I think it is a coding bug.)
However, you should always be able to get the full name in the Sentence box below each fact.

Thanks, Mike, that sounds quite complicated at a first reading but I will go through it a few times with the screens in front of my and see if I can make it work.

Then I will
a) be pleased
b) come back with more questions
or
c) give up and make do with first names only :roll:

I'm going for option C - the solution was way out of my depth at this stage!
