wrong parents

Post by sailor842 »

How do I move an ancestor, her children & spouse to different parents?
I have an ancestress who is possibly attached to the wrong parents.
i have 2 Asa Bryant's uncle & nephew & confusion as to which are the parents.
I have since solved the problem. But, I have to move the ancestress to a different Asa.
How is that done?

Step 1, with wrong parents in focus window, unlink your ancestress from these parents. (Right click, select unlink) NB this will automatically unlink her husband and children too, who will stay linked to ancestress.
Step 2, with correct parents in focus window, add a new child ‘from existing’, then select your ancestress from the recordset.
Step 3, use the up/down arrows to place your ancestress into correct chronological order of the children.

I have moved this to the FH General Usage Forum, which is more appropriate for FH specific questions.

See how_to:removing_unwanted_relations|> Removing Unwanted Relations that summarises the technique perfectly explained by Mike Loney.

I had done the steps suggested. Nice to know I did it right.
The screen shots show the problem that prompted my query.

I now have harriet bryant listed twice. How do I combine?

I am not sure who Harriet Bryant is.
Your screenshot shows Asa Bryant [236] and Miriam Colbeth JOHNSON [954] twice due to duplicated Family records.
(This problem is similar to the Double Entry? (17956) recent posting.)
It also shows two similar children Asa Bryant [942] and Asa R Bryant [869] both born in 1852.

I guess you wish to merge Asa Bryant [942] and Asa R Bryant [869], and combine the two Family records.

It can be done in one Family record merge, but I suggest you do that in two phases.

In the Records Window, hold down Ctrl key and select both Asa Bryant [942] and Asa R Bryant [869]
Use the Edit > Merge/Compare Records... dialogue to ensure all the required facts are matched and click Merge.

Also in Records Window but on the Families tab, click the first column header to sort records into order.
Scroll down to locate the two ...of Asa BRYANT and Miriam Colbeth JOHNSON records.
Select both and use the Edit > Merge/Compare Records... dialogue to Merge them.

If you have any doubts about what details to merge then click Cancel and ask for advice.
