Media - Link or Insert

Good evening
I am familiar with the concept of Linking or Inserting media into Family Historian.
If a Media item is "Inserted from File" is it included in full backup and an item "Linked to Existing Media Record" is not included in a full backup but saved in the Media file which would make a full backup smaller?
At the moment I "Insert" Media - if I decide to "Link" Media to FH what is the process to alter my existing media files?
Thanks
Philip

You need to be clear about the difference between a Media
File and a Media
Record. The Media
File is usually an image file, such as a JPG or TIF file. If this file is held within the Media folder of your FH project it will be included in a full backup. If it is held outside the project it will not be included in the backup. This is what determines whether the file is included in the full backup.
When you
Insert from File you create a new Media
Record in FH. You need to do this if you have never previously created a Media Record for this particular file in FH.
When you
Link to Existing Media Record you are simply creating an extra link to a Media Record which you have already created. For example, you might have a photo of a group of people. You only need to create one Media Record for the photo. You can then link it to several different people, using Link to Existing Record.
if I decide to "Link" Media to FH what is the process to alter my existing media files?
You don’t need to do anything to alter your existing media
files. You simply select an existing Media
Record from the list which is displayed when you choose that option.

Philip.
Lorna has explained this perfectly well and the differences are well documented but let me try to simplify.
All Media is LINKED to FH a link is all Gedcom can support.
If your media is within the FH Project folder it will be backed up using full backup, if it exists elsewhere on your computer (as mine does) it will not be included in the full backup.

If the question above is "how do I get my media included in the scope of full backup" then simply move your media collection within the FH Project folder and run the Fix Broken Links as explained to you before on another thread.

Thank you Lorna
That helps me understand - a media used for the first time is "Insert from File" and subsequent uses of that file is "Link to Existing Media.
Once again thanks

Than you - it is easier to understand now.

Thank you, I will be attempting to encourage researchers to think about how to name their media files next. After that a short on how I rename files within Family Historian to finish off this practical mini series.
I'm happy you get something from them.
