Media attached to sources showing as unlinked

Post by Ruth_W » 13 Jul 2023 18:21

I've been happily and successfully attaching media to my sources and citations, either manually, or using AS. But I've just learned a bit more about media and I'm going through my media, checking broken links, adding links to people where this is missing etc.
I have opened the Media Records window and sorted them ascending, so those 10-20 which show 0 links are at the top. So, let's take as an example a media file for '1951 probate Wilson, John' showing 0 links. When I go to John Wilson, the image of the probate record is showing properly against the probate fact and source.
There are only a handful of these, all saved in the Media folder. As they are showing correctly as I wished, I suppose I don't have a problem, but I am curious as to why (if it's not too technical!), - and does it matter?

Perhaps you have accidentally created two Media Records for the same image. If so, one of the Media records might be unused.

It's possible to have two Media records with the same name but different record ID numbers. If you sourt the Media list alphabetically do you see any duplicate titles?

If you don't see duplicate Media Record Titles, try sorting on the Filename column to see if the same Media file is linked to more than one Media record.

When you find the Media attached to John Wilson follow the link to the Media Record and check its Record Id, then compare that with the Record Id of the Media Record with 0 Links.
If they are independent duplicates then you have to decide if one can be deleted or the Media Records should be Merged and the File link and Media file resolved.

Thank-you for both these helpful replies. It does seem that some of them are duplicates, but Mike's suggestions of sorting by filename and by record ID have helped me sort them out!
I know it doesn't make a great deal of difference to my actual records, but if I don't sort it out now, I'll be back wondering about this in another two years ...

Thanks for asking this question! I'd noticed the same thing, but then forgot to post here about it. Now I have the solution - just need the time to implement it!!
