Good afternoon.

I am currently running FH7 V7.0.20 and have me data and media located at C:\Users\fagan\OneDrive\PERSONAL INFORMATION\Documents\Family Historian Projects\Reiflan Tree\Reiflan Tree.fh_data\Media.

My question what is is the maximum number of characters I can use in a file name?

I am trying to formalise my file names.

Thank you
PhilipR

What the Help page does not make clear is that the 255 characters limit also includes the full folder path too.

So your folder path is C:\Users\fagan\OneDrive\PERSONAL INFORMATION\Documents\Family Historian Projects\Reiflan Tree\Reiflan Tree.fh_data\Media\ which is 121 characters.
Allow 5 characters for the dot and file extension, i.e. .jpeg or .docx and so on.
If your Media files are held directly in that Media folder then their filename can be 255 - 121 - 5 = 129 characters long.
If you have any subfolders within the Media folder then you must subtract their length too.

However, it is not so much the Media filename that matters as the Media record Title because from within FH it is the Media record Title that is more visible.

BTW: I have moved this thread to the new Media forum recently created.
