Installing and merging

Post by Crosspatch82 » 05 Jul 2023 08:24

Please can some kind person see a way to put me on a road to success?

I am in dire need of advice.
Having installed FH 7 to my new computer, I can’t send my most up-to-date Family File from my FH6 to my new computer because:-
a). It’s a gedcom file.
b). It’s already on 2 computers, a defunct desktop and a laptop.
c). The old computers are Windows 7 and the new one is Windows10 upgraded to 11.
d) Instructions on the FAQs are so technically advanced don’t seem to start from where I am.
e). I have tried to transfer using a memory stick but that’s where problems b and c finally kick me into touch.
f) last worked on my tree in 2013 and am now trying desperately to get into it all again.
Yours in hope,
Anne Cross

Anne, first please update your FHUG Profile shown on the right of your posting to say Family Historian: V7.
Click on your username Crosspatch82, navigate to Edit Profile, set Family Historian to V7 and scroll down to SUBMIT.

I presume that on your new computer, the FH V7 File > Project Window lists just the Family Historian Sample Project.
I presume the File > Project Window > Location: is My Documents\Family Historian Projects.

I presume you cannot use your old defunct desktop at all.

I presume there is only one Family Tree Project that you want to transfer from old FH V6 to new FH V7.

If any of those presumptions are wrong then let me know before going any further.

The following steps use Windows File Explorer...
On your old laptop, is there a folder in the Documents folder called Family Historian Projects?
Inside that folder, there should be a folder with the same name as your old Family Tree Project.
Copy that entire Family Tree Project onto your memory stick.

On the new computer copy that memory stick folder into the Documents folder called Family Historian Projects.
i.e. It should look just the same as on the old laptop inside the Family Historian Projects folder.

Now open FH V7 and File > Project Window should list the copied Family Tree Project.
When you open that Project, FH will offer to convert it to FH V7 format.
Set that Project as your default and you should be good to go.

The only remaining question is whether you had any significant customisations in FH V6 on the old laptop?
If so then there are a few more steps. Let me know if that is necessary.

Hello - thank you so much.
I sent you a detailed reply and it was refused. Why?
Who knows…..
On the laptop I find the file I need by opening the FH from the screen.
It still seems to be a gedcom file and does not show in File Explorer under FH projects but I can still find it in V6 under gedcom tasks.
I can’t seem to persuade it to copy to memory stick tho I’ve tried 3 different ones. I have opened a new project in V7 with the same name.
Giving up for tonight as we need to eat.

If you spend too long typing a reply then FHUG times out and you lose the message.
I suggest you type your long message into a plain text editor such as Windows Notepad.
Then use Copy & Paste to enter it into the topic Reply box.

Sorry, I naturally assumed you were talking about an FH Project rather than a free-standing GEDCOM file.

In FH V6 on the old laptop, open the GEDCOM file, then use the File > File Statistics... command.
The File Name: entry at the top gives the full file path to the .ged file, so make a note of that.
Close FH and then use File Explorer to copy that .ged file onto your memory stick.

BTW: When open in FH V6 are there any Media images displayed for the Individuals or elsewhere?
If so then there are some extra steps needed but we can come back to that later.

On the new computer use File Explorer to copy the memory stick .ged file to somewhere memorable like your Desktop or perhaps the Downloads folder.
Then double-click that .ged file (or right-click and choose Open). It should then open in FH.

If you want it to become a Project then in the File > Project Window... select the new empty Project your recently created and use More Tasks > Delete Project to remove it, then Close FH.
Open FH and in File > Project Window... use New Project... and choose Import a GEDCOM file, then Browse to select the .ged file and complete the dialogues.

By Jove, I think we’ve done it!
Many thanks.
Too bleary to check further tonight but looks good so far.
You’ve lifted my 82 year- old sense of optimism no end.
