I am at the point where I want to upload my FH tree to my account on The Genealogist website, but I can't find that as a specific option.

Can you advise the best choice from the available list.

Conincidentally, I encountered this challenge yesterday and was intending to ask the same question.

As a general rule, I cannot provide support for products that do not offer a free GEDCOM upload capability.
I have to rely on users who do have a subscription to provide suitable feedback. Currently, that includes FTM and TNG.
If necessary, the feedback will lead to a custom setting in my plugin.

I've looked at The Genealogist online Help and could not find anything about uploading GEDCOM files.

Initially, I suggest you try to determine whether The Genealogist prefers GEDCOM 5.5 or GEDCOM 5.5.1 and use one of the plugin GEDCOM Destination: Custom Export ... options with appropriate choices for the other Basic Options.
That Custom Export ... option can be further customised to match what The Genealogist prefers.

Let me know what options work best and I can then create a dedicated GEDCOM Destination: setting.

BTW: Should this be in the Exporting forum or remain here?

Bit chicken and egg... I haven't got a tree there because I haven't worked out hw to upload it. So I've nothing to export.

However, it isn't a priority for me right now.

A reminder that if you just want a bare bones tree extract, the GEDCOM export from the Ancestry sync plugin will probably be suitable. An advantage of that method is its automatic and very thorough management of private individuals and events.

However, if you want a “full fat” tree with all your media, sources, notes, and other supporting material, you are stuck with the more complex options.

Uploading an existing tree
One of the benefits of using TreeView is that you can access your tree wherever you go. So if you access the internet from local libraries you can login to your account from there or login from a relatives house to show them your tree.

If you already have family trees on another software program or website, you can easily transfer the information onto TreeView. You will need to check the settings on the current program and find an option to export your tree as a GEDCOM file. Then save this GEDCOM file onto your computer.

Open up TreeView on TheGenealogist and you will see a blank tree with the option to either 'Add Individual' or 'Import GEDCOM file'. Select the import option then search for the file on your computer using 'Browse'. Once you have located the correct file open this then select 'Import'.

It doesn't say anything about which Gedcom version.

As with most products, you can create a simple core family tree by hand and export that.
Alternatively, just upload any GEDCOM and probably most core structures will be accepted, then export that.

I have an old Legacy tree on the The Genealogist I have tried exporting this and it exports as Gedcom 5.5. I want to replace this with my up to date FH tree, so I will do some trials tomorrow.

If The Genealogist successfully imported a Legacy GEDCOM then using the GEDCOM Destination: (LFT) Legacy Family Tree might work well.

True, but it's also the name they give to the online tree builder, though I assume there's some kind of inbuilt integration.

There are some video tutorials which appear to relate to the online tree product, covering Getting Started, and importing from Ancestry, Genes Reunited and MyHeritage - see https://www.thegenealogist.co.uk/help/video-tutorials/ (I haven't watched them.)

There's also a forum with a TreeView section (https://www.thegenealogist.co.uk/forums ... php?fid=15) but I'm not sure whether this is about the software, the online trees, or both.

So can Peter, Helen, David, et al, clarify whether the Export Gedcom File plugin should support the online Treeview tool, or the separate Treeview program, or perhaps both somehow.

Is there any free access to either the online Treeview or the Treeview program that I can use to customise the plugin?

c.f. The plugin supports (MYH) MyHeritage Family Tree both as an online Family Tree and as the Family Tree Builder Windows program.

I have just copied my FH 7 tree and am importing it now. I report back when the import has completed.

The import completed after about 70 mins. No errors were reported and message stated Gedcom file succesfully imported as follows:
4681 Individuals
1205 Families
17457 Individual Facts/Events
957 Family Facts/Events
2711 Sources
93 Repositories
26778 Citations
13251 Notes

I haven't done a thorough analysis but it seems to have done are reasonable job apart from the repositories which I need to investigate. I made the tree private.

I hope this helps. I do have a Genealogist subscription but do not have the offline version of TreeView.

Places seem to be part of facts.
No media records uploaded.

I haven't found a link from The Genealogist to the TreeView site there seems to be a disconnect in this respect.

I think you need to analyse the TreeView data more closely to make objective judgements.
Perhaps export a GEDCOM file and review that in detail or import it to FH and check the File Statistics.

My guess is you uploaded the FH V7 GEDCOM in 5.5.1 format and TreeView expects 5.5 format.
I suspect the Facts discrepancy is due TreeView not recognising Custom Attributes that use the FACT tag.
I would expect the non-standard Place, Research Note and Source Template records to be discarded.
There seem to be a lot of Citations missing perhaps because of missing Custom Attributes.
Where do all those 13251 Notes come from?

This is the kind of analysis I would undertake when adding a custom GEDCOM Destination to my plugin.

Yes, you are on the Genealogist website. The Treeview website is a separate one. But they both refer to the same online tree.

The Treeview website will refer back to the online tree at the Genealogist. I haven't found a link the other way round.
