Export a subset
Hi, I want to export (to a GEDCOIM file) a subset of my database. For instance one family line back from a chosen record. Is there a way to easily do this?

Re: Export a subset
Yes. You need to start by adding all the required people to a Named List. One way to do this is by selecting them in a diagram. This technique is explained in this article in the Knowledge Base: Create an export GEDCOM based on a diagram
Come back and ask again if you have any problems following that guide.

Hi Vic.
Yes, that should be straightforward, but may I check a few things first.
Are you still using FH V6.2 as stated in your Profile on the right?
What are you hoping to do with the exported GEDCOM?
If you intend to migrate it to another Genealogy product then there are special ways to do that to make the GEDCOM as compatible with the other product as possible.
It sounds like you want to export all the direct line ancestors of a nominated person.
However, if any of those ancestors have other descendants do you want those 'cousins' included too?

Thanks. I have v7.0.20. A relative has asked me for this subset and at the moment I don't know what he is using. He just asked for a GEDCOM file. I think he will want the cousins as well.

Re: Export a subset
If you use the technique described in the article I gave a link to in my previous post you can choose exactly which people to include. If your relative only wants the direct ancestors, use an Ancestors diagram to add the people to a Named List. Otherwise start with an All Relatives diagram of the chosen person and, if required, hide their descendants. This will leave you with all their direct Ancestors and assorted uncles/aunts/cousins. Then follow the rest of the steps in the article.
If your relative is not using FH Mike will be able to advise on how to create a Gedcom best suited to whatever they are using, but the initial process of selecting the individuals will be the same.

To update your Profile, click your username Vic Russell and navigate to Edit Profile.
Select Family Historian as V7 then scroll down and click SUBMIT.
Does your relative also want any photos or other Media that are attached to your Project/GEDCOM?
If your relative is not using FH then this posting may well get moved to the 'Importing and Exporting' forum.

Re: Export a subset
I do not have many photos or other media to add so the answer is probably no.
I have updated my profile as you suggest.
Thanks again.
