Add spouse - not father

Post by PhilipD » 15 Jul 2023 10:53

Hello everyone,
I'm new to the group with a lot to learn.
An ancestor gave birth to an illegitimate child. A year later she married a widower who was probably not the father of that child.
I'm trying to add him as a spouse without the chart showing him as the father of the illegitimate child.
Could someone explain how I do this please?
Thank you so much.
Philip

Hello Philip, welcome to FHUG.

You have posted this question in the Diagrams and Charts sub-forum, so you may be trying to add the husband by using the drag-and-drop technique in a diagram. Unfortunately this is one of the rare cases when a new individual can't be added using that technique, for the reason you have discovered.

In the Focus window you should initially be seeing the mother with no partner listed beside her, but the illegitimate child listed below her. Click the small text below the mother and child where it says Add More Relatives for <mother's name>, then click Add Spouse. The next box will say 'Add missing spouse to this family?'. Click No, because you don't want to add the spouse to the existing mother-and-child famliy. Now click Create New Record. You can now create the new spouse (or link to him, if he is an individual already in your file).

There is an alternative method, as follows:
In the mother's Property box, Main tab, you will see a section in the middle for her Spouse and Children details. There you will see two tabs, one saying <no spouse> but with the illegitimate chid listed below. The second tab will have a + sign. Click this second tab, then Add Spouse/Partner, then Create New record. Then enter the husband's name in that tab.

In the Focus window you will now see the mother listed twice, once with no partner but the illegitimate child, and secondly with the husband.
