Chart Everyone -a layout question

Post by Bracken26bwr » 02 Jul 2023 21:25

I have a "chart everyone" tree that shows all records (boxes) from two separately entered groups of the same family.
A degree of overlap exists between the groups, ie: they share some individuals.

I merged the relevant records with the result that the "Chart Everyone" diagram now shows a joining line between the two individual's "boxes". No problem.

But the two original group/clusters still show on the "Chart Everyone" in there original positions despite them having now been joined & chronologically ordered.

The impression I get is that the "Chart Everyone" displays (top down) in "date of entry" order and not based on a "significant dates" such as birthdays.

Is it me?
What have I missed?
Can it be corrected?

Family Historian displays in the order the people are in the file. Imported gedcoms are often in the incorrect order, to sort them select Tools>Reorder out of sequence data from the menu.

The everyone diagram will normally use an all relatives diagram based on the selected root and then add additional diagrams to include everyone in the file.

So if you have a file with for example both your family and your husbands you will get two trees if you select the root as yourself, but if you base it on your child or on you both as a couple it will probably produce a single tree. As a general rule a tree will only show people related by blood.

If you save a chart and reload it the structure will not always change, if you want to check your merge and sort try starting a new diagram.

You might find it easier to work with one of the four simpler diagram types (Ancestors, Descendants, Ancestors & Descendants or All Relatives) until you have got used to the basics. The All Relatives diagram is a good startng point, probably with yourself as the diagram root but you can select different people as diagram roots for different purposes.

An Everyone diagram, as the name suggests, displays everyone in your file including groups who would not fit into one of the four main diagram types, for example ancestors-of-spouses-of-direct relatives. It does this by displaying sub-trees on different parts of the page, and uses linking ribbons to show where key people in each sub-tree fit into the main tree in a different context. This might explain why you are still seeing linking ribbons.

Another possibility is that when you “merged the relevant records” you only merged Individual records, not Family records. If there is no Families tab showing in the Records window, use Tools>Preferences>Records window and under Record Type Display Options set Families to Always Show. Now in the Families tab of the Records window you might find there are several duplicate families listed. If so each pair need to be merged.
