What method are you using to add the parents? Are you doing it in the Focus window? Or in a diagram? What type of diagram?

If you are looking at a diagram it needs to be one which will display the daughter's parents. An All Relatives diagram, for example, includes only 'blood' relatives of the diagram root plus spouses of those relatives. So if the daughter herself is only included in the diagram as a 'spouse' her own ancestors won't be displayed. You would need to use the All Relatives + Indirect Relatives Diagram, or the Everyone Diagram. Alternatively create a diagram with the daughter herself, or one of her parents, as the diagram root (but this will not include ancestors of her spouse).

One of the easiest ays to add parents is via the Focus Window as illustrated below.
Use the Add Daughter's Father or Add Daughter's Mother link above the Daughter.
If the parent already exists in your Project then use the Link Existing Record option.
Otherwise, use the Create New Record option.

I suspect you cannot add parents (or other relatives) via a Diagram unless they would be included in the diagram if they already existed as relatives.
i.e. In an Ancestors Diagram, you can only add direct line ancestor parents but not spouses or children.

Robert, as I said in my original reply, "... So if the daughter herself is only included in the diagram as a 'spouse' her own ancestors won't be displayed. You would need to use the All Relatives + Indirect Relatives Diagram, or the Everyone Diagram. Alternatively create a diagram with the daughter herself, or one of her parents, as the diagram root (but this will not include ancestors of her spouse)."

Your diagram shows that Mary Paisly is included in the diagram as a spouse of Samuel McGarr. Therefore her parents can't be displayed in this diagram. It looks like an All Relatives diagram for one of the McGarr or Little family. Try one of the other diagram types I suggested.

Not sure what you are asking - it's done what you said it wouldn't do in the initial post has it not?

I never use diagrams to add people, I find it far more logical in the Focus Window as Mike Tate suggested.

Lorna, Rob cannot use some of your suggestions as he is using FH V5.

Rob instead of saying 'this' and 'that' it would help if you explained in detail what you did and why it is not what you expected.
Also, explain the type of Diagram you are displaying and who was the root person.

Mary Paisley has got parents John and Jane so what is the problem?

Earlier you said you were using an All Relatives diagram but the screenshot says at the top it is an Everyone diagram.
It is not possible for FH V5 to display in one tree everyone related to the diagram root via some marriages. That explains why Mary's parents are not included sometimes and only appear in a separate tree.

BTW: It would be much clearer if you attached screenshots of the diagram.
See Forum Usage Tips under Attachments and Taking Screenshots.

Sorry, I didn't notice that Robert is using V5, which didn't have the All Relatives + Indirect Relatives Diagram option.

It has done what I said it would do if you create a diagram with the daughter herself, or one of her parents, as the diagram root. That is what Robert has now done, and her parents are correctly displayed. But, as I said, the ancestors of her spouse are not included in this diagram.

You need to use the Everyone Diagram, which will, as you have discovered, show her with her parents in a separate small tree.

One other option is to create an All Relatives diagram with Mary Paisly and her husband as joint diagram roots. (Select one of them by clicking their box in the original diagram, then hold down the Ctrl key and click the other box. Then create an All Relatives diagram.) This should include all relatives of both of them.

(Edit: I have moved this topic to the Diagrams and Charts sub forum)

In which case what is confusing then Lorna, is that Robert's first screenshot shows 'Everyone Diagram' on the header

Yes, I'm wondering whether Robert has turned off the option to show connecting 'ribbons' in the Everyone diagram, linking people in the main tree to their duplicate boxes in their sub-trees. His photos don't show the whole screen so it's possible that what he is showing us is the main tree (first photo) and the separate tree (second photo) in the same Everyone diagram, but without the linking lines.

I think there is misleading wording being used. [Posted at the same time as Lorna.]

When Rob initially said, "I'm trying to put the parents of a child into my tree". Several of us thought he was trying to add new parents to the child Mary Paisley. However, I think he means 'displaying' her parents in the same tree as her husband's parents as shown in his first screenshot. Her parents will be shown in another small tree elsewhere in the Everyone Diagram. Normally they would be linked by a 'duplicates' coloured ribbon, but I suspect Rob has turned that off, which fooled some of us.

I don't think his second screenshot is the same Everyone Diagram because the Father has a white background which indicates the diagram's root person. However, we cannot see the whole diagram and the colours in the photos are poor.

As several of us have said, FH diagrams will often not display relatives of spouses of direct line relatives and this is an example.
So as Lorna says, if you choose a suitable diagram root and display an All Relatives diagram then both parents appear.
In the case of an Everyone Diagram, the same effect can be achieved by redefining the File Root person because that is what the Everyone Diagram uses as the diagram root person. However, similar missing parents and sub-trees may affect other parts of the diagram.

I think Robert has changed the default colours. It's a bit hard to tell but it looks as if both Mary's father and Mary herself have white boxes. They can't both be the diagram root.
