I am finding the use of icons very helpful to keep trace of my research, but cannot see how to suppress the icons when printing for example a descendants chart. Is there a quick way to do this or are they a permanent fixture once created? The icons have been created with expressions.

You can create many different diagram types, some with and some without the icons.

When you first added the icons did you just add them to one of the standard diagram types (e.g. Ancestors, Descendants, All Relatives etc)? If so, the first thing you should do is open one of those diagrams and use Diagram > Save Diagram As > Custom Diagram Type, and give it a meaningful name. This will preserve those settings. You can access custom diagram types from Charts > Custom Diagrams.

Did you make any other customisations to the standard diagrams? If not, you can now revert to the icon-free style by opening one of the standard diagrams and in Diagram > Options > General tab click Restore Defaults at the bottom right, also clicking Remember Options at the bottom left.

If you have made other customisations which you want to keep you can create a new custom diagram by opening one which has all the customisations, including icons, and removing the icon box expressions, then saving it as another custom diagram type with a different name. In this case, DO NOT click Set as Defaults at the bottom left.

It's a good idea to save a new custom type whenever you make any changes, so that you can always get back to the previous type if you need to.

I concur entirely with Lorna's advice except for one small point.

To restore the defaults to standard Diagrams you must visit each Diagram Options tab and restore each one separately.
Most of them have a Restore Defaults button but a couple do not:
The Boxes tab needs either each custom Condition to be Deleted or use of the Presets > Classic (Box Types) option.
The Text tab needs Birth, Marr, Death to be selected and then Edit Text Scheme... and use Restore Defaults but make sure you have used Clone... to retain a cloned copy of the custom Text Scheme first.

Thank you both for your replies and apologies for posting twice. I couldn't see my original post when I looked and thought I must not have submitted it.
To hopefully clarify my question, the icons I have added are flags for birth and death countries and census icons, all generated by the use of an expression. I find them very helpful to denote what I have done and what I have yet to do. However I created a new project to produce a quick tree for a friend and didn't realise that the icons would print in this tree also. Not that it mattered as it was just the birth and death place flags. I will play around with your suggestions, helpful as always,

Ann, it is important to understand that the vast majority of FH customisations, including those to Diagrams, apply globally to all Projects on the same PC.
Furthermore, Project Backups do NOT save those custom settings, so if the worst happens they cannot be recovered from Project Backups. Therefore, you need to use one of the 'Backup and Restore FH Settings' plugins to save those custom settings.
