Update to Bills USA Census Template - add 1950 template

Post by BillH »

I have updated my USA Census template to add the 1950 census which will be available in April 2022.

Please update Ancestral Sources Template ~ Census USA 1790-1940 as follows:

1. Change the name to "Ancestral Sources Template ~ Census USA 1790-1950".
2. Change the first sentence to read "These templates are variants of the USA Census for almost every decade from 1790 to 1950.".
3. Change the update date to read "Updated by Bill Henshaw & tatewise (21/12/10)
4. Replace the contents of the text to be downloaded to create the template with what is in the attached file.

Thanks!

Bill, I think you can submit that Contribution directly in the FHUG Kb via Contribute > Add/Update a Download

Mike,

I wasn't sure since I had the other changes to the page as well. There didn't seem to be a place in the form for those types of changes.

I imagine the changes go in the Content box and will get reviewed by an administrator, but I'm not 100% sure.

I tried submitting it via the form and got this error:
This file type is not allowed. Please try another.
The name of the file was Bills USA Census Templates.xml.

I tried renaming it to Bills USA Census Templates.txt and got this error.
Sorry, this file type is not permitted for security reasons.

Perhaps the administrators need to investigate those symptoms.

I have been experiencing what may be related problems updating Plugins in the Plugin Store where it thinks the content is suspicious and CP have to help bypass the restriction.

If you look at the entry you're trying to update, there is no file -- the template is stored as text, so you should enter it in the content field at https://fhug.org.uk/kb/add-download. You can also include the changes you want to make there, as it will be used to completely overwrite the existing content.

We'd prefer you to use the KB form where one exists, as it can do some validation of what you're submitting that can't be done here.

Mike, this nothing to do with the problems you have in the plugin store.

Helen,

When you say "it will be used to completely overwrite the existing content", do you mean I have to redo the entire entry in the content field or can I just list the bullet items that I did in the post above?

Bill, yes (cut and paste the existing content and edit it). Plus fill in all the mandatory fields on the form. That way, you'll get exactly what you want without anybody's intepretation, and nobody (me) has to act as your typist. Don't worry about formatting, however -- that will have to be sorted out by somebody with editing privileges.

However, the changes are so minimal (other than the template), on this occasion just paste the new template -- as I'm in a good mood.

Helen,

Thanks for letting me take a shortcut. However, I filled in the form and pasted the template into the contents field and submitted it, but after 5 minutes the progress indicator is still just spinning away. The template is over 6000 lines. Could that be the problem? How long should it take?

BTW:
The How to Add Content to the Knowledge Base Adding Simple Content without an Account only seems to explain the Add mode of the options and not the Update mode.
It would be helpful if the advice Helen just gave were included in that section for updating an existing entry.

Good idea Mike -- chuck something into Maintaining the KnowledgeBase which is where I'm trying to keep track of all the queued changes.

Bill, I have no idea -- I don't think we ever envisaged that large a text update! (I sincerely hope it's the only one that big).

How extensive are the changes -- if it's just the addition of one census, can you provide that census as a separate entity? (We'd still include it in the same overall 'download' article.) If you can't I'll queue it to do myself...

Helen,

The changes are just the addition of the section for the 1950 census. At this time the template contains a section for every decade from 1790 to 1940 (except 1890 which doesn't exist).

I can upload just the template for 1950, but then there would be one accordion for 1790-1940 and another for 1950. Is that OK or should we break it down so there is a different accordion for each year?

I was just thinking that every time a new census becomes available in the US, a new template is needed. Same goes for other countries like Norway. Would it be easier in the future if there was a separate accordion for each year?

It doesn't matter to me, I was just wondering for future maintenance.

A separate accordion for each template would be best in future, but let's not make work for you reorganising the existing one (unless you want to do it). It's been done for some of the AS template downloads, but not all of them by any means.

Helen,

I tried submitting just the template for 1950 and that didn't work either. I tried with both Chrome and Firefox. Is there a problem with the form or the website?

There's no problem with the form or the website -- I just posted 107 paragraphs, 10000 words, 67305 bytes of Lorem Ipsum -- but clearly it isn't working for you, so I'll get the relevant expert to investigate...

In the meantime, attach it here and I'll do the necessary -- no point in you wasting any more time. My apologies for your problems.

Helen,

Very strange. Not sure what is causing my problem.

The entire USA Template including 1790-1950 is attached to the original post if you want to cut and paste that. I have attached the template for just 1950 if you want to cut and paste that.

Thanks!

Why can't these AS downloads be download .xml file links like most other downloads?

Because xml is a security threat, Mike, and the KB hosting provider disallow it.

Bill,

I've tried cutting and pasting the entire set of templates, but they're simply too big...

I've tried adding just the extra template and that isn't working either.

Leave it with me (ad the relevant expert) and we'll have a think.

I've added the template as a zipped file, Bill -- can you check everything looks OK?

Helen,

The file looks fine. This has the added benefit of being easier for anyone using it. Just download and unzip.

I can zip up the template files for my other countries and upload them if we want to make them all consistent in how they work. Let me know.

Thanks,
Bill

Helen,

Ok... I submitted updates for Arizona, Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Norway, Washington, and Wisconsin. Hopefully I didn't make any mistakes as I was doing a lot of cutting and pasting.

Thanks!
