In the past I have input individual surnames as they appear on birth/marriage/death certificates. However as I have so many different spellings of the surname (MacGillivray - there appear to be over 50 variants of spelling!), is there a way to change all variants to one common surname, without renaming each one individually, so that my index of individuals and diagrams are more sensible?[confused]

Renaming individuals surnames
Probably the Quickest is to use a text editor.
Make a safe copy of your file.
Open the file in Textpad or PSPad or similar.
Do a search and replace for the spelling of the name you want to get rid of searching for /ccccccc/ and replacing with /ddddddd/ where cccccc is the old name and dddddd is the new name.
