Downloading usable gedcoms?

I tried using a gedcom from
http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/
but it wasn't very compatible with FH? Is there any way to DL FH-friendly gedcoms, e.g. of royal families that may go back very far and would be extremely tedious to create generation by generation.

When you say it wasn't very compatible, what errors did you get.
If they are really Family Search Gedcoms try installing the V5.0.1 upgrade and see if that helps (assuming you are running V5).

As Jane says, what sdo you mean by not very comaptible? I've downloaded files from that website before and have not had issues at all.
If you are refering to the report FH gives you when you open the gedcom, this is a report of what FH sees as errors and most of the time, it will correct them without you having to do anything. But like any good program should, it gives you a list of what it has changed. This doesn't mean you can't work with the gedcom you have downloaded or that the gedcom you have downloaded is no good. It's not an incompatible file, just one that didn't come from FH. You'll get this with every single program that uses gedcom. No two programs use gedcom in exactly the same way.

The well-known
royal92.ged certainly opens in FH with no significant errors. It can be downloaded from the following site, e.g. by right-clicking on the link
royal92.ged and then
Save link as... (or the equivalent command for your browser).

Sorry for all the trouble, I don't know what I was doing before but now it works perfectly.[smile]
Thanks for the replies!

Jane mentioned V5.0.1 upgrade - I've just did the 'check for updates' and got the message 5.0 is the latest.
Am I missing something here as I don't see anything on this website re any current upgrades other than Jane's remark.

Like Goodwin I hadn't heard of the 5.0.1 upgrade so looked at Calico Pie's website. It looks like it's the early phase (Beta?) to address some of the issues probably raised by FHUG members. It's called a Release Candidate and is easily downloaded with full instructions given there.

I realize now what was going on is that I was trying to import a gedcom with a field like Birth: before 1860. FH needs it to be in the form of: bef 1860, otherwise the field will display
'before 1860' with quotations.
