Multiple User Accounts Not Supported

Post by tatewise » 09 Apr 2012 17:19

This has been a long standing issue with FH and should have been improved by now.
Virtually all other software can be used and customised from any number of User Accounts on one Windows PC.
Microsoft Office and Ancestral Sources, to name but two, allows each User Account to have their own custom settings quite independant of each other.

Family Historian does not allow this.
I can run FH from my User Account and customise it for my personal family history research OK.
Then my wife runs FH from her User Account for her one name study, and she has to change some File > Project Window settings before FH will even open her Project.
When I run FH again from my User Account I have to repeat the same File > Project Window settings to get started.
The same is true for many of the Tools > Preferences settings.

All this is even before the annoyance of us both having to share the same Custom Queries, Reports, Diagrams, Plugins, etc.
But we could live with that.

The reason why FH has this strange behaviour is easily explained.
Many of its custom settings are stored in the Windows Registry just like other software.
Mostly these settings are stored under the HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftware hive, which as its name suggests, keeps the settings separately for each User Account.
But some important settings are stored under the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWARE hive, which affect the whole PC globally.
Two of the most significant of these are the Default Startup File and Default Backup Folder, but there are others as described in Understanding the Scope of Features.

I believe it would be relatively easy to transfer these settings from
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWARECalico PieFamily Historian2.0Preferences to
HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareFamily Historian2.0Preferences or something similar.
