PDF file output is not enabled

Hello everyone. My first post.
I have tried previous answers on this topic without success.
I am using Version 5 upgrade from a full version 4 on Windows 7 32 bit.
I have successfully reinstalled v5 upgrade. During the process I saw novapk.exe whizz by and later it said something like 'Installing PDF, this may take a few minutes' and then finished without any error message, but still I get 'PDF file output is not enabled.' Cold restart computer didn't help.
I was using Diagram - Save Diagram As. If I try File Print there's no sign of a PDF printer Also Control Panel Hardware Printers shows no PDF printer. Should there be?
Any help would be much appreciated
Mike

Try File > Print... and select Family Historian PDF as your printer. That printer should also show in the hardware list.

The Control Panel > Devices and Printers should list Family Historian PDF.
Check that Control Panel > Programs and Features lists:
Family Historian PDF (novaPDF 7.0 printer)
Family Historian PDF File (novaPDF 6.1 printer)
Have you had any other virtual PDF printers installed?

File Print does not show Family Historian PDF in the drop down list, only my two HP printers.
There is no Family Historian PDF amongst the printers. There's no PDF printer at all.
Thanks for taking the trouble to reply
Has anyone any ideas?

You original posting said you 'have successfully reinstalled v5 upgrade'.
I take this to mean that you first installed the V5 Upgrade over FH V4.1 and then re-installed the V5 Upgrade a second time on top of itself.
If this is not the case then try the re-install of the V5 Upgrade which has worked for other members.
One minor thing that should not make any difference, but if the V5 Upgrade is a download as opposed to a CD, then right-click the file, open Properties and click the Unblock button near the bottom.
Possibly try suspending whatever anti-virus software you have running while the install takes place.
You didn't say whether the Family Historian PDF printer was OK with FH V4.1.
I presume this is all being performed from an Administrator account.

Thank you for your help. The problem is now SOLVED.
I don't think PDF printer was there under v4 as I never used it and I don't remember it as an alternative printer.
When pdf didn't work under v5 I did a reinstall of v5 upgrade over the previous v5 and that didn't help. I've now tried your advice to unblock the file but unfortunately that didn't help. I don't think I can uninstall and reinstall the v5 upgrade leaving v4 intact - the Control Panel - Uninstall a program doesn't show FH v4 any more.
I have now uninstalled Family Historian altogether, restarted the computer and started again, installing v4 from disk and then v5 upgrade from the downloaded file. Now all is fine and PDF is there in all the places it should be. Still no idea where or when it went wrong but thanks for the advice and support. It is puzzling because the upgrade program certainly spent a while installing the PDF printer and didn't report a problem.

FYI:
You do not need to install FH V4 before installing the V5 Upgrade.
You simply have to be prepared to enter both the V4 and V5 licence details.

In that case you are perhaps unaware of the body of advice in the FHUG
Knowledge Base available by clicking top left.
For example there is the
FH Installation Guide with details of
How to (Re-)install Family Historian.

Mike,
I was just wondering. I show the first (7.0) file, but not the second (6.1). What is the 6.1. file used for? I don't seem to be having any problem creating PDF files within Family Historian. I also have CutePDF Writer installed.
Thanks,
Bill

I suspect Family Historian PDF File (novaPDF 6.1 printer) is left over from FH V4.
The date on my FH V3 to V4 Upgrade download and the installation date of (novaPDF 6.1 printer) are both 19/02/2010!
Perhaps, Jane or Simon could say whether Family Historian PDF File (novaPDF 6.1 printer) should be uninstalled?
The date on my FH V4 to V4.1.3 Update download and the installation date of (novaPDF 7.0 printer) are both 10/06/2010!
