County Flags

Post by Merenwen » 02 Apr 2012 16:48

Does anyone have a good source for images of traditional county flags?

I want to include icons in diagrams to show where people came from within England, but I need some flags to get started. I'm mainly after Northumberland, Co. Durham, Yorkshire, Yorkshire Ridings (east and west), Lancashire, Sussex and Hampshire.

County Flags

I just used Google images with name of county and flag. I ignored the obviously wrong ones.

I then got into a debate in my mind as to whether I should use the ROI flag for 19th century Irish ancestors and whether the City Of London flag was right for City Of Westminster ancestors, but then as I used a Nottingham flag that was designed within the last few years I just thought, hey.

The result is here

but it looked better on the pc - I've probably used the wrong file extension

Nice colourful result Chris; interesting as well.

Particularly useful if you do not have any photos of the person.

Exactly what I had in mind! But my worry is that as I'm not from around any of those parts myself, I wouldn't know the ones that are obviously wrong.

Interesting thought tho about using the right one as things change over time. Newcastle was Northumberland and is now Tyne & Wear and there is no city flag to fall back on. Got a couple of places that change county at some point. Will think about my approach there a bit more.

Thanks Jane, but that list confuses me. For instance I can't work out what the flag for county durham is. It lists Durham Council and Durham City, but not Co. Durham. Or is it the same as for the council? Also, it's not 100% correct as the local authority flag for Hampshire council is blue. The one listed is the county flag. I'll keep hunting the web.

County Flags

Hi Merenwen

I didn't go as far as County flags, but I do have Country flags on my icons for BMD and census. When it came to Ireland I was aware how easy I could offend someone by putting the wrong Irish flag, as feelings of nationality are very strong there. I opted for the traditional diagonal red cross on a white background as most of my Irish ancestors were a long time ago.
I would imagine that County flags won't be so controversial, except perhaps between Yorkshire and Lancashire maybe, but you certainly have your work cut out with borders changing over the years. A lot of my relatives are from parts of London, but that could mean Middlesex, Kent, Essex, Surrey etc.
I am sure your trees will look great when it is done though, the icons with flags do make a difference.

Good Luck with your efforts

Steve

I wish! Must be a northern thing, but feeling for birthplace are very strong in my in-laws. If I put a city durham flag on a co. durham person, I'll be in trouble! Same with a northrumbrian one on Sunderland (althou technically correct at one point)
